My Skin Care Routine

A lot of you have been asking me for a while now what I do to keep my skin looking clear. Everyone is prone to having breakouts at some point. But there are things we can do to keep our skin looking clear and healthy. Keeping your pores unclogged and free radicals off your skin is very important. Making sure you clean your skin thoroughly will insure healthy skin as well. Today I am going to show you the products I use and what I do to keep my skin looking and feeling healthy.

  • Clarisonic Brush –, Amazon
  • Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash – Can be found at any drugstore or at Target and Amazon

The first thing I use, and I have been using this for years, is the Clarisonic brush. Every dermatologist and esthetician I have been to recommend this or something like this. There are several versions of this on the market ranging in price as well. I use this with a cleanser that is compatible with my skin, for me that’s the Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash as I have acne prone skin. This has a small amount of salicylic acid in it to help fight breakouts. If you have more sensitive skin you may want to find one that is more suitable for your exact skin type. I use this with the clarisonic brush every morning to help clean my skin and make sure my pores are clean as well.

Using a facial mask is an important part of any skin care routine. A good mask will help draw impurities out of your pores and then close them leaving the skin firm and clean. I like the Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque. I do this about twice a week in the mornings after I have washed my face with my clarisonic brush. Simply apply the mask and allow it to sit for approximately 10 minutes then wipe it off  with a soft cloth.

Serums go deep into the skin than a regular moisturizer and allow nutrients to go into the skin where a regular moisturizer isn’t able to reach. Apply serum to your skin after cleansing but before moisturizing your skin to get the full benefits. The one I use is Ole Henriksen Vitamin C serum. This has a light orange scent that is not overpowering and feels wonderful on the skin. The vitamin C in this is great for producing collagen and antioxidants. I only do this in the morning after I have used my Clarisonic brush and I allow it to sit for several minutes to give it time to fully penetrate the skin before moving on to a moisturizer.

s great for not clogging my pores or leaving my skin feeling greasy. It also has Niacin in it which helps with anti aging and rejuvenating the skin along with helping anyone with acne prone skin like myself. Because I have drier spots, like my forehead, I use something more intense. For those areas I use the Dermaquest K-Q10 Rich Moisturizer. I get mine from my dermatologist but you can order it online as well.

Eye Cream

Eye cream is vital in helping to prevent crows feet and wrinkles from forming around the eye area. I use the Clinique All About Eyes and I use this right before going to bed. This helps keep aways those dreaded bags and is an overall great moisturizer for using around the eyes.

This is the final thing I use in my skin care routine and it’s the one you have to be the most careful with. Retinol gets rid of dead skin so that your skin can renew itself and produce more collagen. Basically, it encourages skin cell turnover. When you first begin you need to start off using .05 %and work up to .1 % and just use the product 2 -3 times a week. I have worked up to using it every night but this is gradual and takes time as not to harm the skin. I use this after I have washed my face and applied my moisturizer at night time. It’s best not to use this during the day because it does promote new cell turnover you don’t want to expose the new skin to the sun or it will damage it.

So that’s my skin care lineup. I hope this helps you all in getting and maintaining your skin so it can be the healthiest skin you can have. Also remember, it’s important to hydrate from the inside out so make sure you drink lots of water and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables as it really does make your skin so much healthier. As always stay happy and healthy!

Hi marlena , i was wondering that if you had only a couple blemishes would i have to cut down the frequency of how many times i do the treatments or, use less product but do it regularly?

Hey Mar,
i just thought you might want to know, Ole Henriksen is pronounced like ooh-la. just incase you cared :P

So you put your retinol on after your moisturizer? That’s good to know. I thought I had to put it on clean, bare skin.

Hi Marlena or anyone that knows, how would I know which Clarisonic Brush to buy? I looked on the site and there are different ones and different heads etc… really like the idea of using one of these but not sure where to start… if anyone can please help!

I have been using the clairsonic for years! I would just use the normal brush. That’s the only one they had when they came out many years ago. All those other heads are cool, but the normal does it all! I did buy the sensitive one very soft but too soft for me. The deep pore one too tough and a little rough on my skin. But it is your own preference! I would get the Normal head brush though! Hope this helps.

Please review the hello Kitty wild things palette at sephora! I’m thinking about buying the giraffe one but there are 0 reviews on youtube for it!

Please make sure to use a sunscreen with these products (and don’t rely on SPF in your foundation), since your retinol makes you more sensitive to the sun :)

hey marlena, love watching your videos, you are great. i happen to notice you said you wash your face in the morning and i just happened to watch a dr. oz show where he talked about things we might do that secretly age us and one of the thing he said was a no -no was washing your face in the morning despite whether your skin is oily or dry because your skin needs the oils that it produces during the night.

just thought i would pass that along, i dont know if you follow anything he recommends or not. by the way, i tried getting the revlon colorstay foundation but for some reason they dont make all the same colors for the dry formula and oily formula. i think the golden beige would work for me but it isnt made in the dry formula which i need. i tried the sand beige but it seems to pink, do you have any suggestions?

What a great post. The Clarisonic Brush is great for light exfoliation. I also love the best facial masks, and using one twice a week is critical to get natural ingredients like clays, herbs, and essential oils on your skin. The Vitamin C serum looks great as a serum! I also like to choose the best facial masks with vitamins and minerals. Retinol and the under eye treatment are wonderful anti-aging products. You really know how to have a beautiful facial!

I’m 34 and aside from using sunscreen religiously (I still think it’s the best anti-aging product out there), I also use Nuvosa for good measure. I love their Deep Wrinkle Remedy Serum.

Just helping spread the word about a great product. You can google them or check them out at anti-aging skin care

Happy New Year!
