NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil vs. Palladio Shadow Crayon

Eye shadow pencils are quickly becoming more and more popular.  These multi-tasking beauties have come a long way and owning several can only benefit you. You can use them to line the upper and lower lashline, and although the thick tip can make it a bit difficult it’s not impossible.

For a quick eyeshadow nothing could be more perfect. Make sure to use a primer and swipe on your color of choice. Use your finger to blend it out and that’s it, a quick and easy way to add color to your lids.  Without doubt however, their most popular use is as an eyeshadow base. Apply primer first and then place the eyeshadow pencil on the lid and pat on a coordinating color. The wash of color from the pencil will give more depth to your look and help intensify the color.

Two of the most popular but inexpensive eyeshadow pencils are by NYX and Palladio.  The NYX pencils are typically the most well-known of the two, but we want break down the differences between the two and let you know which ones are must haves.

Comparison Swatches

Before we get into the details of the products, here are some swatches of both brands so you can see the colors offered and how they compare.

NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils

NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils are like oversized crayons for your eyes. You will need a bigger sharpener for these or you can opt to depot them. If you do depot them, use them the same way you would a MAC paint pot. However, I find using them in pencil form is much easier. It also makes them great for travel, just throw a few in your bag and that’s it.

These pencils are a great inexpensive base to use for any eyeshadow! With the wide range of colors, it makes them very versatile and they also come in an assortment of finishes from matte to shimmer. With a range of 32 shades you are sure to find a color that is perfect. They are very creamy and highly pigmented. Another up side to the colors is their names. You know what the color will be just by the name.

The only down side is that they do crease throughout the day. You may need to keep some eyeshadows on you for touch ups. With so many to choose from, it will be hard to pick just one. Don’t shy away from the bright colors especially now with summer here. Here are the basics that we think are a must have for everyone.

Must Haves

  • Milk – A true matte white color, perfect for placing under white eyeshadow to make it pop more or used under vivid colors to make the shades more vibrant. (Makeup Geek Store)
  • Black Bean –  Matte black finish, perfect for creating a smokey, sultry eye and deepening a eyeshadow color. (Makeup Geek Store)
  • Dark Brown – Matte Brown finish, great for creating a brown smokey eye or a quick daytime look. (Makeup Geek Store)
  • Iced Mocha – Shimmery mocha shade looks great on the lid when creating a brown eye or as a base for a taupe eyeshadow. (Makeup Geek Store)

These are available in the Makeup Geek Store for $4.49 USD (with inexpensive international shipping) and at various other retailers. If you decide to try some of the brighter shades, opt for ones that you feel more comfortable with at first. For example, if you wear purple eyeshadow try “Purple” and use it alone as a shadow and then move on to using it as a base to intensify color.  Or, try one of the brighter neutral shades like “French Fry”. This is a shimmery bronze/gold color perfect for an extra pop of color.

Palladio Eyeshadow & Liner Herbal Crayons

Just like their name would suggest, these also look like jumbo crayons. These pencils are a great alternative to the NYX pencils. Just like NYX, they are a 3-in-1 product. They can be used as a liner, base and an eyeshadow.  Although just slightly more expensive than the NYX, these seem to have better staying power and don’t crease like the NYX.

The down side is the amount of shades that are available. Right now there are only 12 available compared to NYX’s thirty-two. The majority of their shades lean toward the neutral end of the spectrum with only one “bright” shade in the bunch. Most are just as creamy as the NYX pencils, but some colors do take a couple swipes to get a good application.

The texture of these pencils are very different than the NYX’s. They glide on smooth, but do have a little bit of a rough texture, this does however make the eyeshadow seem to adhere good to the base.

These are available in our Makeup Geek Store and a few other retailers.  With so few colors available you really can’t go wrong no matter which shade you choose. If you are feeling adventurous, try a shade like “Raspberry” to add a pop of color to your lids.  Or their shade “Blue Suede”, which is stunning on the eyes.

So no matter which one you decide to try, NYX or Palladio, be assured you will be instantly hooked. With their flexibility and price, you can pick and choose and never feel disappointed.

Overall Impressions

  • If you are looking for a dark base, the NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Black Bean works wonders! A good comparison to it is the Palladio Shadow Crayon in Black Pearl. I found that the NYX pencil glides on more smooth than the Palladio, but all in all both give great coverage. I did find that the NYX pencil creases after a couple hours and you may have to retouch your eyeshadow. The Palladio pencil doesn’t as much.
  • A color that I absolutely love is the Palladio Shadow Crayon in Eclipse. NYX doesn’t make a color that is quite the same, but NYX Slate is comparable. Again the NYX Pencil is more potent, but the Palladio has a unique color.
  • I found that I liked the Palladio Crayons in the warmer colors better than NYX’s. Palladio Shadow Crayons in Espresso and Iced Coffee are gorgeous! A comparable color is the NYX pencil in French Fries.
  • Palladio does a great job with the warm colors, but not so much with their brighter colors.
