Best Foundation Techniques For Oily Skin

Hey, Makeup Geeks! While there are many perks to an oily complexion (woot woot for fewer wrinkles!) there can also be some major annoyances…like melting foundation—yikes! If you have oily skin, you understand how frustrating it can be to achieve a flawless foundation application when your products want to slip and slide around on your face. The struggle is REAL! Don’t fret—we’re coming at you with our best oily skin foundation tips and tricks, and we hope you’ll follow along!

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

  • Clay-based face mask
  • Glycolic acid-based face toner
  • Mattifying face primer
  • Facial tissues or blotting sheets
  • Loose or pressed face powder

STEP #1: APPLY A CLAY-BASED FACE MASK AT NIGHT.

Incorporate a clay-based face mask into your nighttime routine to absorb excess oil and mattify the skin. Two clays commonly used in face masks are kaolin and bentonite…so keep an eye out for those ingredients.

STEP #2: APPLY A GLYCOLIC ACID-BASED TONER IN THE MORNING.

If you feel like your skin is still looking a bit oily in the morning, use a toner with glycolic acid. This ingredient reduces oil production and prevents your pores from clogging—um, yes please! We like Peter Thomas Roth’s Glycolic Acid 10% Toning Complex Clarifying Toner.

STEP #3: APPLY A MATTIFYING PRIMER.

Apply a mattifying primer to create a barrier between your skin and your foundation. This primer barrier will help keep oil from breaking through and separating your foundation throughout the day.

STEP #4: APPLY A MATTE FINISH OR MINERAL POWDER FOUNDATION.

Both matte finish and mineral powder foundations are drier than traditional satin or dewy finish foundations, and won’t add any additional oils to your skin. Score!

STEP #5: SET YOUR FOUNDATION WITH POWDER.

Be SURE to always set your foundation with a smooth powder. To do this, take a thin sponge or beauty blender and press the powder into your skin, focusing primarily on the t-zone. Keep a powder compact with you for on-the-go touchups.

STEP #6: USE FACIAL TISSUES OR BLOTTING SHEETS.

If your skin is still producing too much oil, use blotting sheets or single-ply tissues to soak up extra moisture. Gently pat your skin—avoid rubbing, as it may remove your foundation.

Pro Tip: When selecting your blush, go with powder blush…NOT cream blush. Also, only apply cheek highlighters to the top outer parts of the cheekbones. Adding too much shimmer can accentuate and/or create the illusion of oily skin.
