Lash Extension Tutorial

I get so many questions from all of you about eyelash extensions, facial,s and skin care that I wanted to have my esthetician Kristina available to help answer questions. She has been a tremendous help in getting my skin in order, especially since I struggle with adult onset acne.   Here’s a link to her website in case you live near Sacramento and need someone to help you with your skincare needs :)  Esthetic Arts

Lash extensions are not like false lash strips or individual false lashes. Both of these are temporary and last for only a few hours at a time. Lash extensions last much longer and fall out with the natural lash. Lash extensions that are done by a licensed lash extensionist are individual lashes that are identical to your natural lashes and glued onto the actual lash itself. They come in different lengths and different thickness as well. You can get a partial set, full set, or they can be customized to get the exact look you are wanting to achieve.

Question: How long do they last?

Answer:  Typically each set is going to last 6-8 weeks. If they are bonded to your natural lash properly they will last the cycle of your natural lash. Your natural lashes shed every 6-8 weeks and as they fall out the extension will fall out with it.

Question: Do they ruin your natural lashes?

Answer: No, they are bonded to the natural lash so as it sheds the lash extension goes with the natural lash and a new lash will grow in its place. If the extensions are done properly then your natural lashes are safe. The problem is a lot of “extensionist” are not certified and instead of one extension being adhered to one natural lash, they will have it bonded with several causing you to lose some of your natural lashes. The key to finding someone who is knowledgeable in what they are doing is to do your research. Below are some important questions you should ask.

  • How long have you been doing this?
  • Are you a certified lash extensionist?
  • What lash brand do you use? (Kristina uses Novalash)
  • Ask to see before and after pictures.
  • Do they have any reviews?

Question: Can you still wear eye makeup and mascara?

Answer: You can wear eyeshadows and everything else however, it is not recommended when you have a full set to wear mascara simply because you don’t need it. The lash extensions give the illusion of having mascara on. If you do want to wear mascara there are glycol free mascaras that you can purchase to use that won’t break the adhesive bond on the lashes. Just make sure you treat them gently and don’t tug or pull at them.

Question: What is the cost?

Answer: This ranges depending on where you live but they typically range from $200.00 – $400.00 for a full set that takes 2 hours to apply. You will come back for touch up every 2 – 4 weeks Dristina charges $29.00 for 30 minutes. So the initial investment is the most you will pay but the maintenance is relatively inexpensive.

Do the extensions come in different colors?

I feel compelled to tell my recent terrible experience with eyelash extensions. I went to a well respected licensed practitioner who had received fabulous reviews. I have very light blond fair hair and lashes. The lashes looked crazy on me because they were so dark and visible as compared to my natural light lashes. While I had them done with the hope of not wearing mascara because they were so light I needed to wear heavier eye make up than ever to look “normal”. Because I needed to wear mascara which is not recommended, it resulted in damage to my natural lashes. I would not recommend this for those who have very fair hair unless you can get lighter lashes.

What about eye makeup remover? Would that dissolve the adhesive? Do you need to take special care when removing your eyeshadows not to touch your lashes? Do you have to use a glycol-free remover?

Neat! I might look into this before my wedding (only time I can justify the expense, haha).

On a random note, it would be awesome if MakeupGeek could start doing something like a city guide, where you can recommend local estheticians, artists, stores, and whatnot. Maybe starting in Sac? Other MUGs could contribute for other places. :) Just a thought.

Sorry i am so UPSET! i have been visiting MUG store daily for over a week now to check if MUG gel Iiner in the color Electric is already back in stock bc i have an order to place but i want to wait for electric. Now fame is also out of stock, another item in my shopping cart ;-( darn it!!! Anyone knows how long until they are back? Thank you, Ligia

Now, as i wait for electric and fame to be back in stock, eyeshadow stealth also out ;-( what a bummer! I think i am never gonna be able to complete this order.
