  1. Ok, This is Weird but Hear Me Out Review by Danielle

I got this shade hoping it would be a dupe for Nooner from UD's naked 3 palette. It is a near exact dupe swatched on the skin, for those interested.

But the reason I'm writing this review is to tell you this: This is the best eyebrow shade I have ever used.

I don't know why. It looks so purple in the pan! I would never have tried it if I weren't lazy and it happened to be the closest thing I had to hand.

Anyway, I am very fair (nw 15) with light ash brown eyebrows, and I have a problem with most eyebrow pencils and powders being too warm or too dark and looking strange. But this shadow somehow works perfectly with the cool tones in my eyebrows. It doesn't look purple at all on the brows, just a cool, light brown that matches and enhances my natural coloring.

I know it's odd, but I just had to share, in case someone out there with my coloring has the same brow issues I do.

And don't get me started on how great this shadow looks thrown up in the crease and smoked out on the lower lash line... (Posted on 6/25/16)

  2. Perfect for olive skin tone Review by Nemesis

Beautiful when used as an all over the lid with Cupcake in the crease and Shimma Shimma in the inner corner. Really makes brown eyes pop. The color is a very subtle purple just so unique and rare. (Posted on 6/10/16)

  3. Come On IN! Review by shannon

thank you thank you thank you for making a shade of a grey pink/purple base that doesn't make me look ashy because of skin tone range if your wondering im 178 in makeupforever hd and this i mean im gonna be messing with my makeup till 7 and its 4 in the after noon i mean next month my check is yours guarantee! but don't get greedy mug stay the person i fell in love with (Posted on 5/18/16)

  4. YES Review by Connie

I love this color. So buttery. Maybe because I'm fairer the color shows up more... I was just reading another review that mirrored my feelings about Cupcake. I was so disappointed by Cupcake because it didn't show up. But Unexpected. YES. YES. YES. It's certainly gorgeous, and the perfect blending color for my skin tone. Perfect. I'm in love. This plus Sensuous in the crease. OMG. Do you understand that I have been through 4 Sephora palettes looking for the perfect eyeshadow pairings? Making my own palette on MUG was definitely worth it for this picky girl. (Posted on 3/25/16)

  5. Disappointed at First Review by Carrie

Looking at the swatches of this eyeshadow, I was really excited to buy it. However when it arrived in the mail, I swatched it on the back of my hand and couldn't even see it. I was really disappointed and tried to exchange it but MUG doesn't do exchanges or returns. So I figured I would try to do my best with it. I had to pack it on my eye literally 6 times in order to get the color that I see in reviews. What's crazy is that I am very light lol I'm the same color as Marlena. However once I packed it on it really is a beautiful color but MY GOSH you have to go through so much product just to get the color to show up. (Posted on 12/11/15)

  6. Unexpected fan! Review by Jasmine

In the pan it looks like such a blah light lilac pinky shade....put into the crease and it blows my mind! Great for using with cool tone eyeshadows to bring it together with warm skin. I love it was MUG Insomnia pigment.

Fantastic addition to my collection. (Posted on 9/30/15)

  7. Not for Warm Skin Review by Mandy

This was one of the first shadows that I bought from MUG. I was excited. I look at pictures and videos of people using it and it looks amazing. However, on my Italian skin (and im pretty pale right now but still warm toned) it doesn't show up. I tried building it.. And it just looks chalky. It is very smooth though so I'll probably use it asa transition colour for my purple or taupe looks. (Posted on 9/19/15)

  8. good Review by tatiana

i wanted this color for very long and was a lil bit disapointed, its not as mouve as i thought, its like a dirty purple, so idk.... but it works in the crease, so its up to you... (Posted on 8/17/15)

  9. yesss! Review by Inga

stunning taupe- purple. I don't really like matte shadow all over my lid, but this looks amazing! (Posted on 8/8/15)

  10. LOVE THIS! Review by Kirstin

Beautiful pinky/muted light dusky purple which is a great transition shade. I also put this under my lower lashline when I'm doing that "no makeup" makeup look. (Posted on 6/16/15)

  11. Great unique eyeshadow color Review by ColorGirl

In my first set of order of 5 eye shadows, this is my favorite. It caught my eye when i was browsing for the eyeshadow colors, because it's so unique. I thought it would be a mutated purple/pink color, but it is more of a mink/grey purple. It is very beautiful! I actually used it to contour also, which worked out well! Will use this one a lot for sure! (Posted on 6/12/15)

  12. Cool and Mauve Like Review by Margaret

I think this is a beautiful color just not on me. I prefer warm tones and have yet to find a way to make it work on me. (Posted on 6/11/15)

  13. So pretty and unique Review by Megan

This shade has changed my makeup routine completely, there's something about this color that makes me feel so beautiful. I feel so confident when I wear it. It looks fantastic on my pale skin (I have blue eyes, too). I wouldn't describe this shade as a matte pale pink brown, but more of a muted, cool-toned pale purple with gray undertones. Texture isn't creamy particularly but it's very smooth and blends well, which makes it great for all over the lid, in the crease or as a blending color. Versatile, unique (to the "frugal" makeup world) and beautiful! I hope it's never discontinued, will continue to repurchase as long as I live! (Posted on 6/4/15)

  14. LOVE IT Review by Alexandra

I am medium tan colored (i think lol i have a weird color) but I absolutely love this color. Its a matte purplely gray cool toned and I just love it and it's one of the colors I use the most. I either use it as a soft crease color, or a cool transition color, or on the lid for a purple/gray smokey look. For some reason I also love combining it with bitten. I hope they never discontinue it, as it's a color I haven't been able to find elsewhere. I'm gonna order a few more just to be safe :) (Posted on 5/7/15)

  15. Disappointed Review by Shirley

This is the only MUG eyeshadow I've ever received that has horrible color payoff. I have loved every other product I've bought. (Posted on 5/3/15)

  16. Not very pigmented Review by Rachel

This is a nice, neutral lavender-leaning taupe. I like the color very much, but I was very disappointed in the lack of pigmentation. It absolutely needs primer to show up, plus a lot of building up, and I'm very, very fair-skinned. I also find the texture on the dry side. Very disappointing, especially since MUG is so hyped on beauty blogs. I hope this is an aberration. I wouldn't buy this shade again. (Posted on 4/21/15)

  17. So Pretty! Review by CHLOE

Perfect crease color for pale skins, it helps to warm a cool grey or even blue makeup look.
It is so nice, I was surprised as I'm am usually not a big fan of pink/lilac. (Posted on 3/16/15)

  18. The warmer the skin tone, the bigger the problem :( Review by Brianna

I am a huge advocate for MUG and MUG products. Many people with richer skin tones worry about how well products will appear on their skin, even with a primer. I've never worried about that when it came to MUG eyeshadows as they always appear just as pigmented on my skin as they do anyone elses. Unfortunately, that has not been the case with this shadow. It's beautiful in the pan but on my honey brown skin, it's nowhere near as pigmented. I find that I have to work harder with this shadow than any of my other Makeup Geek products. It can easily look chalky on me. I feel like I'll only be able to wear it as a blending color for my grey/smokey eye looks. This is the first shade I can truly say I will not be repurchasing because it is too difficult for me to work with. Those lighter than me should have no issue and those darker than me might get a more washed out color than what's in the pan. All I can say is if you're in the middle like me, you may find that it's not the most friendly shade for our skin tone. (Posted on 1/14/15)

  19. Not unexpected lilac :) Review by Angela

As a redhead with slightly fair skin I apply it all over the lid on its own. This lilac makes my grey eyes pop. Love it!

I also ordered "Creme Brullee" and "Peach Smoothy". All three eyeshadows are highly pigmented without beeing chalky and the texture is sooo buttery. Excellent! No need to buy high priced MAC anymore because makeupgeek eyeshadows are so much better. Thank you :)

Too bad I discovered makeupgeek quite recently since it is hard to get in Germany. (Posted on 12/30/14)

  20. Give me more! Review by Boglarka

I use it every day and I love it. The color is more on the cool side, beautiful matte, gorgeous for crease and blending. After applying, it stays on the whole day, and it looks 12 hours later still the same. Amazing. (Posted on 12/8/14)

  21. Best crease color. Review by Marion

I use this almost everyday my crease. It's so surprisingly versatile! Whether I'm wearing a wash of a pale shimmer on the lids or greens or blues or browns, Unexpected is an "unexpectedly" great match for almost any look you could think of. I don't know exactly how to describe it. It's a light purpley-pinky-brown with maybe the tiniest hint of grey. The picture on the site and swatch don't do it enough justice at all. I mean, I have two pans in my pallet, because I never ever want be without! Just total perfection. (Posted on 10/17/14)

  22. New favorite crease color Review by Riss

Beautiful, unique purple-brownish color. Goes well with my asian skin. Such a subtle color for the crease, you can always build it up. Pigmented, smooth, and easy to blend. Easily became my new favorite crease color along with Cocoa Bear! I would definitely repurchase. (Posted on 9/28/14)

  23. hmm.. Review by anna

This was my least favourite color from my order. It's nicely pigmented and smooth. The colour is like a mix betweem mauve, purple and grey. The pictures and swatch are quite different than the actual eyeshadow. The pan picture is way too light and violet-ty. The same goes for the swatch picture.
Would be maybe good as blending color. (Posted on 9/3/14)

  24. Surprise! Review by Chex

Wow... I was definitely not expecting to like this colour but it is so pretty on the eye lid. Not to mention it is super creamy and just gorgeous!! If you aren't sure whether you want to buy it just take a leap of faith and you might be surprised! (Posted on 7/9/14)

  25. Versatile and long-lasting Review by rodcin

This color is very versatile--and beautiful! I've used it both as a wash all over my lid and as a crease color, and it looks fantastic either way. I would describe the shade as a browned mauve. As others have mentioned, it's along the lines of UD's Tease and Mac's Quarry, but I much prefer Unexpected for its blendability, high pigmentation, and lasting power. With the other two, I have to layer and blend repeatedly for the color to show "presence". With Unexpected, a swipe and minimal blending is all it takes. It lasts all day too! I'm thrilled with this purchase. (Posted on 3/14/14)

  26. Great crease colour! Review by Orlena

Perfect for the crease with colours like pink, white or shimmery on the lid. (Posted on 2/22/14)

  27. smooth & creamy Review by GHYW

I was pleasantly surprised by this lilac grey shadow. I've encountered my fair share of matte eyeshadows that are extremely powdery and not so pigmented but this was unexpectedly smooth and creamy. Great quality, and versatile colour that can be worn all over the lid and blended into the crease. (Posted on 12/1/13)

  28. Perfect for Purple Smokey Eyes! Review by Desiree'

I love using this in my crease to blend out Sensuous and Drama Queen in the outer corner. (Posted on 11/7/13)

  29. Just like Urban Decay's Tease Review by julie

I was looking for a shadow like UD's Tease and I have found it. Great blending color for colored eyeshadows when you do not want to use brown. (Posted on 10/23/13)

  30. Perfect for pinup looks Review by Jennifer

I use this in the crease for my pin-up looks. It is neutral enough but gives off a hint of purple without being PURPLE!! (Posted on 9/26/13)

  31. Cool Color Review by Bella

I love the color in the picture, and was happy when i bought it. It comes out a littler dark on my skin but it a beautiful color for blending and in crease. (Posted on 9/24/13)

  32. LOVE!! Review by anja

I can't say enough good things about this one!
great as a lid color for a soft everyday look and it works great for blending out a purple smokey eye (I use it as a trasitioning color) :) (Posted on 7/11/13)

  33. Love it Review by Elspeth

I brought this and Mocha and I love them both! I love mattes and this is so unique. I wear this a lot in the crease and have read it can look bruised, but on my fair skin I don't see that - it's so pretty! Very impressed with the pigmentation aswell. (Posted on 6/12/13)

  34. Fabulous color Review by Ariana

Unexpected is a fabulous color! It is a great blending color and a great neutral color for all over the lid... I find myself reaching for it again and again. I will definitely pick up another one to add to my collection. Highly recommend! (Posted on 2/4/13)

  35. Great blending color Review by Eden

This color works very well to blend out harsh lines, it's not to light or to dark. I would recommend! (Posted on 12/17/12)

  36. Very Impressed! Review by Anna

This eyeshadow truly lives up to its name - unexpectedly amazing!
I have very pale skin and I use this in my crease - looks great without being too dark. Goes with a lot of other lid colours too!
Well done MUG! A winner. :) (Posted on 10/22/12)

  37. BEST EVER Review by Liz

This colour is amazing. It is absolutely my pick of the collection so far. I've been using it primarily as a blender just under the brow bone, and it works so well to help contour the eye socket. Surprisingly, it seems to work with just about any colour scheme as well.

Its perfectly matte texture has me infatuated. (Posted on 9/18/12)

  38. Blushing Purple Review by Carly

Unexpected is a delicate wam mauve colour, which is great for fair skin as cool purlpe tones tend to be quite harsh and receed the eyes instead of making them a feature. The texture is smooth and silky, blends wonderfully and is highly pigmented so a little goes a long way. (Posted on 8/29/12)

  39. Best blender ever Review by Leah

This is my 'go to' mauve. It looks a little darker in person that it does on my computer screen, but I am very pleased with it. I also have Mac 'Quarry' and agree with Jennifer's review on 5 June and a big YES to the price difference. Marlena - keep up the genuine pricing; I for one will buy your products before I buy Mac! Love your products. (Posted on 8/26/12)

  40. Fantastic colour Review by Charlotte

Not sure where I was before I got this colour, love it! I have medium skin with pinkish undertones and this colour really brings out the ble of my eyes, with cocoa bear or purely naked in the crease. Fab every day look. A must have. (Posted on 8/24/12)

  41. similar to mac's quarry Review by jennifer

I love this shadow! On my medium skin tone it comes out as a muted lavender. On me it's more purple than pink. Unexpected was very similar to mac's quarry when I swatched them next to each other. They are both wonderful shadows for blending in the crease. Of corse the MUG one was way cheeper :) (Posted on 6/5/12)

  42. Unique Review by R

I knew I would love Unexpected but I didn't know I would love it this much. It's just so gorgeous against my cocoa complexion. You can wear it during the day at work, and still rock it at night. Very pigmented too, which is always a plus. (Posted on 5/17/12)

  43. Great quality Review by Kellie

I think this is a lovely matte eyeshadow, it's well pigmented and blends well. I love the colour in the pan but it doesn't wear well on me (I'm fair, cool skin with pink undertones). I probably wouldn't wear this on its own for that reason but it is good to blend out dark plumy shades. (Posted on 5/17/12)

  44. Very pigmented but a little dusty Review by Sandra

I love all of the matte MUG shadows I have & this one is no exception. I do notice, however, that this one is quite a bit dustier than the other MUG mattes. Which means I need to use more product, even with a very good primer or base. It's still a very nice shade, though, and one I use a lot. It leans more pink on my medium skin tone, doesn't look quite as brown as the swatch. Works great for blending out harsh edges or as a base under shimmery colors I want to tone down a bit. I'd definitely recommend this MUG eyeshadow as a great basic matte for anybody. (Posted on 5/9/12)

  45. Great quality Review by Luiza

I really like these eyeshadows! This one is a beautiful purple color, in person it looks different from the swatches, for me. I don't really see brown in it, but I still like it.
I read that somebody said they didn't know a dupe for it, but I have a L'oreal quad (summer dusk 508) and the 4th shadow on this quad looks really similar and it's also matte. (But the MUG one lasts longer and looks more pigmented once you put it on your eyes). (Posted on 4/27/12)

  46. Gorgeous and unique Review by Alice

I was kind of underwhelmed when I first tried out this colour as I couldn't figure out how to wear it. Once I started experimenting, though, I realised what a gorgeous colour this is! I haven't seen a dupe for it anywhere. It reminds me of collared doves--very soft, pinky-grey. It goes well with browns, greys, purples, pinks, and probably more combinations that I haven't tried yet. One of my favourite MUG shadows! (Posted on 4/16/12)

  47. Versatile colour - fantastic for blending Review by Kirkyj

Great blending colour, really smooth and pigmented. I pair this with burlesque for a glamorous day time look. Very versatile colour. Love it!!!! (Posted on 3/20/12)

  48. Very nice! Review by Mariana

It is a great shadow, as base and blends real good. (Posted on 3/7/12)

  49. Interesting neutral with subtle color Review by jujubean758

I agree with previous reviews that this is a neutral color with a hint of color. I've used it to blend out a deep eggplant on my outer v into my crease, and also to blend out a smokey eye as Marlena did in her classic smoky eye tutorial. Nice alternative to using browns or more neutral colors for blending. (Posted on 1/30/12)

  50. Unexpected....Understatement Review by Leslie

I expected a soft purple, but got such a rich pinky/brown color that calling it "Unexpected" was a big "understatement". This blends well with every brown, pink, purple...etc. (Posted on 1/26/12)

  51. Natural Colour Review by Jazmin

This shadow is beautiful, it brings a small amount of colour to the eye, without being too bold due to using colours. It's extremely versatile and the shadow itself is smooth and creamy - love it! (Posted on 1/22/12)

  52. Unique color Review by JJ

This color is very smooth and pigmented, not chalky and all. However I have to be careful with this color because it can me look very bruised, which is not a look I tend to go for. I have very cool undertones but even when this is swatched on my hand it still looks like a bruise on my skin, something to keep in mind if you are very pale with cool undertones (Posted on 1/18/12)

  53. My new favorite! Review by Stephanie86NL

This is such a unique matte eyeshadow! I love that is very pigmented, and that is neutral even though its a color. This is my favorite out of the 8 eyeshadows from the starterkit. I will definitely order more MUG shadows in the near future! (Posted on 1/11/12)

  54. great Review by heather

for the price a great pigmented color (Posted on 1/9/12)

  55. Matte version of MUG Twilight Review by Susan

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE these eye shadows! They are so smooth and richly colored. They also blend like a dream! Unexpected is like the matte version of Twilight. A lovely, dusty purple. While it is matte, it's not the least bit chalky and has a perfect velvet finish. (Posted on 12/26/11)

  56. Similar to MAC's Malt eyeshadow Review by NerdyLibrarianGirl

Love the quality of this eyeshadow. This matte shade is creamy and highly pigmented. Unfortunately, its not a great colour for me (I am very fair with cool pink undertones). Malt is described as a "soft pinkish beige" matte, but gave me that bruised eye look. So did Unexpected. But if you like Malt, this would probably be a great dupe. (Posted on 12/23/11)
