Product Smackdown: Urban Decay Primer Potion vs. Palladio Eyeshadow Primer

Urban Decay Primer Potion

This eyeshadow primer has been well known for making eyeshadows last longer, prevent creasing, and making blending smoother.  Here’s how Urban Decay describes it:  “Packaged in a new squeeze tube with a precise needle nose, these bestselling primer potions glide effortlessly onto the skin providing the ultimate eye prep for smoother, more vibrant shadow and all-day, creaseless wear. “

They come in 4 different colors:  a sheer, pale yellow, light gold, and shimmery champagne.    I’ve always loved these primer potions- they work really well, are smooth, and don’t feel cakey like some primers do.   My only complaint is the price…

Palladio Eyeshadow Primer

This eyeshadow primer is rumored to be made by the same company as Urban Decay.  The formula feels and acts the exact same, but is less than 1/2 the price.  The only difference is it comes in just one color and the packaging is a bit plain (but it’s easier to access the product as the tube is straight)

I will not say that one primer is better than the other as I love both brands- they both work equally well!  It’s all a matter on what your budget is and if you are looking for colored primers or just clear.

Urban Decay Primer in the tube version (they say it’s pro-version) is really hard to take product out and mine is usually clumping :( :( I hate to use it but i can not return anymore :(

There are two UDPP tubes. The “professional” version is larger (and costs more; I think it’s around $30) than the standard size one.

I had the same problem with the larger “Professional Size” udpp. I now have the regular sized udpp in the squeeze tube and have no problems with it.

yeah exactly that one, the pro-version. It’s really hard to take product out and always clumpy :( but I dont wanna toss $30 into the trash so I am trying to use it :-<

Take it back to Sephora – they have always taken product back that I was unhappy with, even without a receipt.

I tried both and actually threw out my palladio primer. For me at least my shadow didnt last at all. maybe my eyelids are more oily then yours!?! i prefer UD and Too faced.

Marlena, Keeping you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. Much love xo

i have realy oily skin and therefor oily eyelids and i cant use the palladio primer either. i gave it to my girl friend and she loves it so i agree with nicole its got to be an oil thing.

Seems that you get twice the amount of product in the new UD packaging. So I think UD is still worth it :-)

I have to say that I love the texture of the UD Primer Potion and the regular one covers everything for me and dries pretty fast as well. Not sure if Palladio is available in the UK? I got my Primer Potion in the Naked Palette, but when that runs out (it’s a mini size) I’ll invest in one of the squeezy tubes.

Sending you love and hugs, Marlena – you always talked so lovingly about your dad and I know how immensely proud he must have been of you. You’ve become a very dear friend to all of us here and on YouTube and we’re incredibly proud of you too and wish you much love. Take care of yourself and your mum xx

Ooh! LOVE this makeup look!! Can you do a tutorial or at least tell me what color you used? Looks amazing on you! And so different!

Dear Marlena,

I was wondering if you could do a video on how to make hollow cheeks look a bit more plump? Contouring has never really worked for me.

Sxxx

I am so sorry for your loss and even though I don’t know you, I am positive that your Daddy was very proud of you and your accomplishments. You are in my thoughts….

hey Marlena!
I was wondering if you could tell me what you think is the best drug store under eye concealer ?

I have been using the regular UDPP for I don’t know how long! It is such an amazing product. Sometimes I put it on my eyebrows before I darken them with a brow pencil…I would highly recommend that! It sure keeps the color to stay on my brows! Just a tip! Try it out!

Um, hate to break it to some of you girls but the old UDPP is .34 oz and the new one is .37 oz, not double the size, only .03 oz bigger.

Personally, when I was new to eyeshadow primers I started cheap with the ones from elf and it worked for me, I can come home after about 12 or more hours out of the house and my shadow still hasn’t creased. so I never felt the need to pay more for a primer. I either by the smaller $1 one, or the larger $3 one, they seem the same to me.

Now if the elf came in a squeeze tube then it would be perfection.

I tried the Palladio, Urban Decay, and the Tarte===

Palladio=great price, made my eyelids break out in little bumps–BAD

Urban Decay=awesome product, THEE BEST for last ing all day, but old packaging is TERRIBLE

Tarte=all natural, great price and lasts all day except where my crease is…but this is the one I currently use :-)

Hi MUGS

I have question related to this. I dont have oily lids, neither my eyshadow crases-ever! But , I use primer so taht color is more vibrant and longlasting. So, which primer/base for eyeshadow is best for me? To make my eyshadow “pop”, and last for a long time?
Thanks.
(sorry if I made mistake, I am not a native speaker)

If you’re looking for something for more vibrant colors but creasing isn’t a concern for you, I would recommend using a white base – maybe even just NYX’s jumbo pencil in Milk. The only problem I’ve ever had with it is that it creases a little after a while, but my lids are a teensy bit oily, so if yours aren’t, you shouldn’t have that problem at all and it’ll be a very affordable way to make your eyeshadows “pop.” :) I hope this helped!

Marelna I’m so sorry to hear about your loss…you and your family are in my prayers…God Bless xoxo

I have oily lids and I feel like I need to use a LOT of UDPP in order for it to work on my lids. My all time favorite and the only one I use anymore is Too Faced Shadow Insurance. I need just a little bit so a tube ($18) can last me 9-12 months.

Have you ever tried using just a tiny bit of UDPP, instead of a lot? I have dry skin but oily lids, and when I first purchased UDPP, I used a pretty fair amount and I was always disappointed in how quickly my shadows would crease, until one day I saw a youtube guru (can’t recall who now) say in a video that UDPP worked better if you only used a tiny bit because it set into the skin more, and I tried that and it works GREAT for me now. I actually scrape the applicator off on the inside of the bottle on the way out (like you might with a lip gloss that you didn’t want too much of), and apply just the tiniest amount, and blend it out with a (clean and dry!) fingertip, and it does so much better for me. :)

Thank you for this comparison. I am going to search out the Palladio primer and give it a whirl. At half the price of the UD, it would be more budget friendly for me, if it works as well. :D

I am so sorry that you lost your Daddy. I know how hard it is to lose a parent, I lost my Daddy in ’08 to prostate cancer. Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and that my heart aches for you in your time of sorrow. *hug*

I have VeRy oily eyelids and have used every brand of primer out there. UD did not work for me at all! Nor did Too Faced or any of the other high end brands. The OnLy thing that has worked for me is Mary Kay’s Cream Eyeshadow with built in primer. Alone it lasts on my lids all day; combined with powder eyeshadow, I get about 6 hours wear which is the longest for me.

Thanks for your review and my condolences to you and your family.

Ladies right now on urbandecay.com they have 3 of their primers in the sale section for only $10. And I believe the larger size for only $15.

So happy to hear about this cheaper dupe for one of my “can’t live without’s”. Also, love your eyeshadow in this tutorial. So pretty.

Marlena I love your vids!! Could you do a product smackdown for the Makup Forever and ELF HD Face Powders?

You always look so amazing I would like to know if the makeup look that you have for this video is the same one from the Breast Cancer Awareness the pretty in pink ?

I bought the Urban Decay Primer Potion in the professional size last Christmas season. It was, of course, fabulous–for the first 5 months or so. It began to dry out, unfortunately, to the point where I couldn’t even get it out of the tube. I cut it open with the intention of transferring it to another container, but it was so dried out it was not usable. I had to throw it out, which is a shame because it was still half full–such a waste! I’m so disappointed! Fellow muggies, DON’T GET THE BIG TUBE!

Palladio’s not available where I am but I love UD’s primer potions. I’ve still got one of the old “genie” bottles but I use a bent paperclip to get all the product out (much easier and safer than cutting it open). I also like that it comes in other colours – I’ve got Sin and Eden in the squeeze tube and I think Eden is probably my all time favourite primer. I’d love to try Palladio, though – hard not to be tempted by those savings!

Dear Marlena First you always fabulous and stunning and yes you just dont give the information about new product but you put your views very true about that product which helps us to choose well. Thanks Marlena and god bless you……….

Great review! I have tried the Eden color and also really liked it. Because I am so fair skinned, it really can serve double duty as a concealer. I often forget to put on my concealer, so I really appreciate having an eyeshadow that is so versatile.

Hi Marlena! First off I would just like to say that you are amazing at everything you do – tutorials, reviews, tags, etc. I would love to see a product smackdown of a Nars lipgloss vs. a Nyx lipgloss. Also, I’m thinking about buying a MAC concealer and I don’t know if a MAC store is by me so I’m just going to buy online. My foundation color is 320 True Beige (from Revlon Colorstay). Would you mind (if you can approximate) what MAC concealer shade I would be? It would mean the world to mean.
~ Breanna
P.S I know they have a foundation finder but everytime I do it, it shows a new shade. One time it says NW40 and the next NC35 and so forth!

NW are typically for warmer skin tones NC for cooler skin tones, thought that is not always the case! i wear Nw25 in the winter and nw30 in the summer! I have mixed skin tone bring irish italian and armenian, probably comparable to lacy schwimmer… hope that helps you base what you need on. i have been wearing MAC foundations…from studio tech to mositureblend, and the mineralizer! I love there longwear concealer as welll!
