Has anyone tried the Wen hair products such as shampoo? If it really works that would be wonderful to know!

Wen is essentially the same as cleansing your hair with conditioner (Co-washing or the No-Poo method), only ridiculously more expensive.

*lol* This is actually the first time in a couple of weeks I’ve had a decent amount of time free to hang out on here. It’s the summer school holidays in NZ, and I’ve been surprisingly busy.

I’ve bought & used Wen & it didn’t work! Not only do you have to spend extra time in the shower to let the conditioning shampoo soak but the original package they send to you is in the almond mint smell. It’s not the most pleasant smell, maybe it’s just me but I didn’t like my hair smelling like breathmints. Other down side is that depending on the length & thickness of your hair you end up using a ton of product at once. I have long, thick hair & I was supposed to use between 12-18 pumps, which ends up being 1/4 of the bottle! Add onto that: I ended up being allergic to one of the ingredients in the product so I had a seriously itchy scalp & weird welts & bumps leading from my neck to the middle of my back.

They make it sound sooooo awesome on their infomercials it’s hard to not want to buy it, but in my opinion it’s a waste of money.

That’s what put me off this specific product. I’m not interested in having my hair smell like breath mints, and considering my hair’s arse length (if straight), coarse and thick, the amount of product I’d need to use makes it astronomically expensive.

However, I do co-wash, which works brilliantly for me.

So with butt length hair you’d be spending probably 20 minutes just putting the product in! It took me forever to part it into sections like they tell you to & apply the product, then you have to let it soak for 10-15 minutes. Not worth the investment. PLUS with your hair that long you’d probably use 3/4 of the bottle in one use!

I don’t disagree with you, but I think time is relative. I can understand that many woman find shampoo a quick and simple solution. I, however, am not one of those people. Shampoo takes forever to rinse out of my hair, and I’m convinced that even with all the effort that it wasn’t rinsing out fully and that that’s why I constantly suffered from at least a mild reaction (constantly red and itchy scalp, aggravated dermatitis). Which I believe is why switching to co-washing had such a huge effect on me.

I’m in no way advocating Wen (personally, I think it’s over priced shite), but I do think switching to co-washing (which is essentially what Wen is, washing with conditioner) can be an alternative for many.

    Just a little info on co-washing …

Firstly, there is generally two approaches. You have those who essentially replace their shampoo step with conditioner, washing their scalp with a cheap conditioner, then rinse and apply a richer conditioner to their hair as normal. Then you have those who use their conditioner as a two-in-one, applying it all over, giving their scalp a massage, and rinsing it without moving on to a separate conditioning step.

Next, you have those who apply conditioner while wet and those who apply it as a pre-shower step while the hair’s still dry. In both cases, the product is usually applied while detangling the hair with your fingers, and is then left to soak. Which usually isn’t for all that long, just the length of time it takes to finish up the other aspects of your shower.

As you can see, the co-wash method isn’t necessarily any more time consuming or more expensive than shampoo.

Those damn infomercials! I kinda wanted to order some pajama jeans, they’re so convincing. Honestly, if I’d seen Wen in an actual store at one point, I probably would’ve tried it.

Sally Beauty does sell a knock-off of the Wen, called HairOne cleansing conditioner, and I did get that. As Aro said, it (and Wen) are just basically conditioners, and you could get the same results with a $1 bottle that you could with the $8 HairOne or the $30 Wen.

My hair is fine, but I have a decent amount of it, and at the time I used the HairOne, it was very long (almost to my butt). It took so long to put in, my arms got tired! I didn’t really feel like I was spending that much extra time, but then, I don’t think I massaged as long as they say you should…

In any case, for my fine hair I didn’t feel co-washing was a great option, at least not with the product I tried. I have heard a lot of people rave about it, and it seems like it could be a real game-changer for some people- particularly for people with coarse, frizzy or naturally curly hair.

If you go the co-wash route, Wen or not, definitely let us know how it works out!

One of my co-workers swears by it and gave me a half bottle. My wife and I both weren’t so impressed. As Aro says, its like shampooing your hair with conditioner. My hair did come out well conditioned, but I wouldn’t say any better than my normal shampoo/conditioner regimen.
