I use the Shiseido White Lucent skincare range. I’m just wondering if anyone suggests a different order in which I should apply the products to get the most benefits out of them.

    Morning:
    1) Cleansing foam
    2) Softener
    3) Intensive Spot Targeting Serum for my freckles
    4) Eye cream
    5) Moisturiser

    Evening:
Same routine except instead of using moisturiser at the end I use serum instead.

I would appreciate any opinion. Thanks in advance.

As a general rule of thumb you should apply from the lightest to the heaviest, and allow each product time to absorb before applying the next. This way you don’t end up with thinner products, such as serums, unable to absorb properly because of a thicker cream being between it and our skin.

Personally, I’d skip the softener and the eye cream- if you look at the ingredients, I bet you’ll find that they don’t give you anything that your serum and moisturizer already have. They’re probably not hurting anything (as long as the softener doesn’t have alcohol or other harsh astringents) so if you love the feel and don’t mind spending the extra money and time, keep them in.

Aro, as always, is dead on, but I’d add that if your serum is silicone based- look in the first 3 ingredients for pretty much any word that ends in “cone”- you may want to apply it after your moisturizer (unless you use a super-rich petroleum based moisturizer.)

For some reason, brands always say to put serum first, but I’ve done a lot of research the matter, including talking to dermatologists and cosmetic chemists, and I really think after may be the way to go. Silicone creates a breathable barrier on the skin, so I wondered: how are is my moisturizer sinking in if this silicone there first? And most of the experts I asked said it could have an effect. Of course, there wasn’t 100% consensus, but enough to make me switch things up.

As a bonus, most makeup primers are essentially just silicone, so you’ll get the skincare and primer benefits from your serum if you use it after moisturizer, before makeup :)
