Hi Mugs how is everyone?
So Im from Australia and lately I have seen a new trend coming from Asia over to my country.
Its called BB cream or Blemish Balm. Its marketed in Asia as the secret of Korean celebrities. Now Im not Asian, actually from a Latino background, but I thought I would buy it and try it out.
Its almost like a tinted moisturiser but claims to be better. its meant to even skin tone (which is a problem I have), cover ance amongst other things. I have only used it a few times and I liked the cover (looks like your not wearing makeup but skin looks great) and the way it feels on my skin.
What I wanted to know is if anyone else has had experience with it and if you could give me more information about your own opinions on it.
So post your thoughts and reviews , thanks.
February 8, 2012 at 6:25 am #150525I just recently ordered one, after a very long tyme of wanting to try this product. It has not come in yet, so I can not tell you my experience. I’ll post again once I get a chance to try it out! I’m very excited about it.. I actually first learned ab BB Creams from a MUG some tyme ago… And became interested… But there were Soo many brands, and as u can see from my picture, I’m a little darker skinned, & most only come in one shade. After the boom in the US, with the high end brands coming out with there own versions, it made me want to try the real ones even more… After some research, I found Missha (sp?) brand that actually comes in a multitude of shades, & heard good things ab it, so that is what I ordered. Do u mind if I ask, what brand did you get yours in?
February 8, 2012 at 6:26 am #150526BB creams were invented in the early 2000′s by a German dermatologist as a soothing treatment for people who’d undergone laser skin treatments, which would also help provide coverage and protection for their delicate skin. In 2005, and with Korean celebrities on board, BB creams gained popularity in Korea, and since then the product has become popular throughout Asia.
BB creams are often compared to tinted moisturisers, I can understand why this is, but it’s a poor comparison at best. A BB cream is a multi-purpose skincare and cosmetics product. I would say that a more accurate definition would be to say it’s a foundation and primer in one which has been made with a decent moisturiser as the base. It provides buildable coverage, and just like a foundation different BB creams offer different levels of coverage. BB creams offer SPF, which is often quite high, but also other skin benefits. These depend on the specific product, but often include things like skin whitening, evening out skin tone, helping heal acne, oil control, and anti-ageing.
As for opinion and information, the first thing I’d say is that western brand BB creams are nothing more than glorified over priced tinted moisturisers, and are absolutely not worth wasting your time or money on. I think it’s disgusting that supposedly reputable brands are producing what is sub par products at best (and complete scams at worst) then labelling them as something they’re not. It’s really no different to if they started labelling tinted moisturiser as foundation. I understand that most can’t pop down to the corner beauty boutique and purchase an Asian BB cream, but you can easily pick them up on eBay for cheap ($10-$20us depending on the brand) with shipping often free or only a few bucks. There’s also countless samples or mini’s sold on eBay for only a few dollars, so you can try before you buy.
The other things is, BB creams are not meant to be used with a primer. I realize that there are many who simply replace their foundation with a BB cream but still use a moisturiser and primer before hand, and I’ve often seen people claim they need to as BB creams aren’t moisturising enough. Think about it, primers are meant to create a barrier between your skin and the products you place on top, using a primer before applying a BB cream prevents it from being able to absorb properly and, there for, from doing all the additional things it’s suppose to do that your foundation doesn’t. If you have particularly dry skin then use a moisturiser or hydrating serum before applying your BB cream, or hey just by a more moisturising BB cream designed for dry skin. There are, however, booster creams available which are designed to be used with a BB cream to help it last longer if you’re having issues with that, and often it’s advised to use serums/fillers to help with wrinkles. But, because of how a BB cream is suppose to be applied and set with a powder, it’s very easy to diminish the appearance of pores through application technique rather than with a primer designed for that purpose.
The only real downside to BB creams is that they tend to come in a very limited shade range. It’s not uncommon for a brand to produce a BB cream in only 2 or 3 shades, and these tend to be at the pale end of the scale. While it is meant to oxidise/blend with your skin colour, and those who find it difficult to find a foundation light enough shouldn’t have too much issue finding a BB cream light enough, it still means finding a shade in the deeper end of the scale is pretty much impossible.
Now, on a personally note, I’ve been using BB creams for quite some time now, and absolutely love them. I have both hyper-pigmentation and Vitiligo, BB creams allow me to get the coverage I desire while remaining whisper light on my skin, and lasts really well against my super oily skin without melting or turning me into an oil dipped disco ball. Considering how oily my skin is I’m normally limited to matte foundations, BB creams are the first product that allowed me to get a slightly dewy look I like to think of as “natural, only awesome”.
February 8, 2012 at 6:52 am #150528Hi Winkie!
So i didnt want to try out any of the expensive brands first as i wasnt sure if i was going to like it, so i decided on garnier bb cream to try it out here in Australia it cost me 12.95 which is around mid-range in term of price. Also it was one of the brands that had a darker shade (i have the same problem as you with my skin, i always get match incorrectly with a red base rather than a yellow base and i end up looking terrible, so i feel your pain when it comes to shades!!!)
The only thing i can fault about it at the moment is its frangance can be a little over powering when applying it. I wear a lot of makeup usually for work so i tend to try new things all the time, especially as i dont want to always wear heavy foundations or full coverage.
So the verdict for me is that it works well (for me). I have also notice that my skin tone has begun to even out when i dont have any makeup on. I dont know if it has to do with the bb cream itself or that i am wear less foundation since using bb cream. I do however need to wear a finishing or pressed powder over the top of the bb cream coz i prefer a matte finish.
All in all i really do think its a good product. Let me know how you go with the brand/s you try !!!!

Hi Aro,I did google search before purchasing the bb cream and i came across this information, its actually what made me go out and buy it.
Thanks for your opinion and thoughts on the product, your insight is great. You were saying that most western bb creams are not what they say there are, could you tell me the main difference such as ingredients, brands and so forth in a true bb cream, that way i know what to look for.
Interesting that some might say that about the primer, i totally agree that this product shouldnt be used with a primer. in fact i think it works better without it which is refreshing as you dont need to use an extra product.
How long does your application last for, i have combination skin so i usually need to touch up about 4-5 hours if im not touching my face too much or its not a very humid day. and in that case its only really i little powder over the top.
I really hope ppl start trying the product out coz it seems to be doing wonders for the girls i have spoken to about it.
February 8, 2012 at 8:44 am #150529I’m surprised you would buy a western BB cream if you’d researched it, given that I’ve yet to see a single western BB cream get a positive review from a beauty blogger with experience in Asian BB creams.
You can pick up a 50ml of Missha BB cream off eBay for around what you paid for the Garnier, and that includes shipping, you could get it for less if you bid rather than using buy now. There’s a lot of Asian BB creams available for around that price point, or less.
That’s not quite what I’m saying. What a product claims on their packaging and in their advertising is true, after all it has to be by law, though we all know it’s often misleading. What I am saying is that western brand BB creams are not in fact the same as Asian brand BB creams, that they are two different products being sold under the same name, and that these products are as different as tinted moisturiser is to foundation.
Trying to tell you the differences in ingredients, brands and so forth would be like attempting the same with foundation, there’s simply too many to be specific about it. The only thing I can really say is that Asian BB creams offer better coverage and actually include ingredients which offer skin benefits, where as western BB creams have a sheer/tinted moisturiser level of coverage and don’t tend to include ingredients that offer any real skincare benefits. Often they make generalized statements about the benefits of ingredients, however, this is a marketing ploy, and if you actually read it carefully you’ll see that they don’t actually claim you’ll gain any benefits from it.
Maybe you should take another look at your Garnier BB cream, because if you look closely you’ll realize that it makes no real claims beyond hydration and spf, and considering you’re in Aussie you shouldn’t be wearing anything less than 30+ spf so their piddly 15 is barely worth mentioning.
By comparison, Missha Perfect Cover BB cream specifically claims to even and whiten skin tone and fight the signs of aging with anti-wrinkle ingredients, to cover blemishes effectively while looking natural and giving a smooth texture and finish, as well as being hydrating and has SPF 42 PA+++ (which is a high broad spectrum rating). Often with Asian brands you have claims, and then you have a breakdown of the key ingredients along with the benefits they offer, so often there’s other benefits mentioned in that area which aren’t part of the key claims of a product.
I have super oily skin, and my BB creams last all day. As a note, liquid foundation never lasts more than 3hrs on my skin, and usually lasts less than an hour. That’s even with primer and setting spray.
You’re suppose to set a BB cream with powder the same way you set liquid foundation with powder, the only time that’s not the case is pact BB creams, which tend to be a cream-to-powder type product. It took me a bit to get use to not having a matte complexion, give that being an oily gal matte tends to be the only option with foundations, but I really like being able to have a slightly dewy complexion. I like the compliments that come with it *lol*
February 12, 2012 at 9:03 am #151654I just had an offer to buy BBcream by garnier for half or something but it gets so many bad reviews online! Im very hesitant plus i think i’m too pale for it anyways
February 12, 2012 at 9:17 am #151656I work for a big cosmetic company and have tried a lot of the new Beauty Balms (BB Creams) out there. My favorite by far is the Too Faced one! I’m 8 months pregnant and love that I can have an easy, all-in-one multi-benefit skin care makup. It has a multi-mineral complex (potassium, magnesium, zinc), also has a chemical free SPF, vit A & E, ginkgo, ginseng, hyluranic acid….all types of goodies. But my favorite thing is how radiant it makes my skin look. I tried the Smashbox one and it was dry looking. The Boscia & Clinique ones did not blend at all and were so clumpy. I also love that this one comes in multiple shades that almost custom blend to the skin. So you get a nice coverage that helps correct the skin + all of the benefits. Oh – and it’s oil free. I would try it for sure!
February 15, 2012 at 7:19 pm #152227I just bought a Image not available
Missha M Perfect Cover BB Cream NO.23 (20ml) + GIFT LotI will let you know how it goes when I receive it, I was going to buy the garnier one also, but after reading this Im giving this one a shot!!
February 15, 2012 at 10:47 pm #152262I have very little experience with BB Creams, but I did just receive Skin79 Super + Pink Label and so far I’m really liking it! I’ve only been wearing it a few days, but it has decent coverage, blends easy, and leaves a nice healthy glow to my skin. If I want fuller coverage I add a dab of Revlon Color stay with it and apply with my Beauty Blender, set it with some powder and it looks great!
February 16, 2012 at 9:31 pm #152470I second Aro’s suggestion to stick with the Asian brands- nothing I’ve seen from any of the Western brands makes me confident that they’re any better than your run of the mill tinted moisturizer. Honestly, that’s totally what I expected BB cream to be…but it is not. I’ve tried several by Skin79, Hanskin and Missha. My favorite is Missha Perfect Cover- I feel like it’s got the best coverage, the SPF is the best I’ve seen, and the color range is better than most BBs (the 13 Milky Beige is the only BB I’ve found that’s fair enough for my paler-than-MAC skin tone).
February 17, 2012 at 4:54 pm #152617I got free samples of the gariner uk I am really pale but I found it gave me glow and it look natural too
When i get my laptop sorted I will add an image better than my AVI too as that is the main bass as I didnt use a foundation either… I like the garnier but that is meFebruary 17, 2012 at 5:03 pm #152619I’m not actually disputing whether or not there are people who like these products, what I’n disputing is the claim that they’re BB creams.
February 17, 2012 at 7:34 pm #152690@JessicaAllison and @Aro
I’m running low on my Skin79 Hot Pink and thinking about trying a new BB cream… I also have the Baviphat Magic Girls for oily skin, but I find I have oil breakthrough more easily with this one (plus the fragrance is really strong)… I’ve wondered about Missha Perfect Cover, I read somewhere that it may not be great for people on the oily side… Was also thinking about trying Dr. Jart Silver label since its supposed to have good oil control and Pretty good coverage… Any suggestions? I’m kind of on a BB-testing kick!
February 18, 2012 at 4:17 am #152788I too have seen reviews of Missha Perfect Cover that say it has low oil control, but to be honest it’s one of my fav BB creams and I have extremely oily skin, I’ve also read reviews from others with oily skin who liked it.
I’ve read mixed reviews about Dr Jart+ Silver, some saying it offers good coverage or good oil control and others saying it doesn’t, but I’ve not tried it myself as it leans yellow.
I do have to say though, when it comes to oil control I think you’re always better off looking at what you can do skincare wise, and to be honest, I don’t find skincare supposedly designed for oily skin to be all that useful.
February 18, 2012 at 11:43 am #152799Good to know, @Aro! Think I’ll give Missha a shot (it’s less expensive too, bonus!)… I also read mixed reviews of the Dr. Jart… As far as skincare goes, I’ve recently revamped things (within the past year) and I seem to be breaking out a little less, this winter my skin has even been a bit on the dry side… But I still get oil breakthrough during the day… Frustrating!
