I’ve got that Stargazer lipstick, as it’s white it’s one that I only use on special occasions and not as an everyday lipstick anyway. Even if it does have lead in it, I’m sure you’d need to eat several sticks of it to get any effect at all, (if it doesn’t make you throw up first, which is more likely.) I’m surprised it’s not a Daily Mail article, they like scaring people too. I’m not worried, I’ll continue to wear lipstick happily.
February 16, 2012 at 11:35 am #152304This is a bit of an urban legend. The thing is lead is a naturally occurring substance, basically everything natural has trace amounts of lead, as well as trace amounts of gold and whatever else.
February 16, 2012 at 12:51 pm #152312Hey gals, I’m not at all surprised to see this crop up on here, but I’m glad there are also people that are aware that this is something that’s been going around forever…or at least for 30some years. It’s total scare tactic journalism- makes a great headline, gets people to tune in to the news when they probably wouldn’t otherwise…
I actually just did a blog post on this because it’s such the “hot thing” right now. It explains in very specific terms what the controversy is about.

And Sarina, the article you read, I hate to say, is just as bogus as the rest. The lead impurities come from the minerals used to make certain pigments. All manufacturers use the same pigments- they have to in order to be compliant w/ FDA regulations. That means that ALL brands are as likely as another to contain lead. While smaller brands escaped scrutiny in this round of testing, indie, organic and “natural” brands are no less likely to contain traces of lead (Burts Bees appeared on the list multiple times, as did one of The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics “Champion” brands).
February 16, 2012 at 4:49 pm #152393Well, Aro and Madeira both beat me on this, as I was just about to post both those links!
But yeah. Nothing new to see here. Next!
February 16, 2012 at 8:49 pm #152453It’s nice to see members jump on this kind of thing though, in respect to attempting to dispel the false information that’s floating around. It’s one of the things I really love about the community, being into beauty products isn’t simply about liking pretty powders, it’s about being an informed consumer.
February 17, 2012 at 2:30 am #152529Indeed, I also like that we’re not just “Beauty Addicts” we’re makeup geeks meaning not into pseudo-science gobbledegook.
February 19, 2012 at 12:58 am #152862Ah yes, the worldwide anti-Pb hysteria. Its just that: hysteria. But I didn’t know it had spread to the makeup world (other than some forms of traditional Kohl where it *is* a real concern.). Learn something every day.
February 19, 2012 at 2:43 am #152882Although yes this is “old” news that has been going on for centuries, as a lipstick person I think it’s important for women and girls all around the world to be more cautious and more aware of what they are putting onto their lips! I bet you majority of ladies who wear makeup don’t know what type of chemicals are found in cosmetics!
Is the lead level enough to kill us…NO, but is it important for this issue to be well know…YES!
If you want to find some AFFORDABLE lipsticks that have NO TRACES OF LEAD check out my post: http://glitzglambudget.blogspot.com/2012/02/lead-found-in-lipsticks-well-here-are.html
February 19, 2012 at 3:32 am #152886This isn’t about the public good, this is manipulation of the facts to suit an agenda and good old fashioned fear mongering.
February 19, 2012 at 10:02 pm #152987Exactly, Aro.
And I seriously doubt any of those lippies mentioned in the blog post are lead-free.
February 20, 2012 at 1:41 pm #153096Found this linked in the comments for the Personal Care Truth piece…
February 21, 2012 at 9:26 am #153267I’m so glad that the lipsticks I have are not there on the top 10 lip products with high lead content. It’s still a little scary that some of the brands that we love have high lead content on their lipsticks
. So mineral lipsticks are better options then?February 21, 2012 at 9:43 am #153272The only thing scary about this is how blindly people believe the propaganda.
