So I’ve started working on my portfolio and I figure I shouldn’t bother watermarking anything for a physical portfolio, because obviously it’ll all be my work, but for an online portfolio, should I watermark the photos? I took all of the photos on my own HD camera with good lighting, and I know when you post photos online of your work, there’s a chance someone will try to take credit for them. Any thoughts?

I’m, personally, against watermarking. No matter where you place one (either in the corner or in the middle), if someone is clever enough, and wants your photo badly enough, they will find a way to get it. Besides that, you want the focus to be on your work, not any text on the photo.

Also don’t bother with disabling right-clicking (again, doesn’t work). Even if you get someone to build you a portfolio website, and they choose to use Flash to do so, someone can still find a way to take your work.

I’m a supporter of Creative Commons Licensing. You can set the terms regarding how someone can use your work. The license I would select for a makeup portfolio is “Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative”: if someone displays your photo on their website, they have to credit you; they’re not allowed to use it for commercial purposes, and they can’t create a derivative work based on it. (It’s not fool-proof, either, but I prefer this over watermarking.)

    I am all for watermarking.

The point is to know who did the makeup not in protecting your pictures. Who wants to steal will steal it. Photoshop does wonders today.

But how can one focus on the makeup if there’s a watermark distracting from the look?

You can create a text caption under the photograph, or even on top of it. CSS does wonders today, too.

I use watermarking… Even not liking it. I don’t like to see my work with the name of someone else.  And if you know how to use and where to apply it, wont take the focus of your makeup!
