Hey there fellow MUGs!
Have any of you experienced an allergic reaction to permanent or semi-permanent hair dye? I died my hair last month using the Redken EQ Shades semiperm that my hair dresser gave me, which I’ve used multiple times before, and reacted to it!! My scalp was extremely itchy that night. The next 2 days my head swelled up (fluid built up under my scalp and was travelling down my face) and on the 3rd day my eyelids were swollen. I immediately went to the doctors and went on a full dose of Prednisone (Cortisone) since Benadryl and Loratadine wasn’t helping. Thank god I went early, apparently some people get hospitalized for weeks! So now I’ve realized that I developed an allergy to PPD-para phenylenediamine, a chemical found in most salon/over the counter hair dyes and that more and more people are getting allergic to it! It is banned in many European countries and the reaction to it really cant be prevented. Some people react to it after dying their hair for years! It kind of sucks because I don’t necessarily like my mousey brown natural hair color..so Ive been researching on non-PPD containing organic dyes or henna. Anyone know of any good brands?
thanks!

For whatever its worth, I Henna my hair, and love it. BUUUT – don’t Henna your hair over chemical treatments of any kind (or vice-versa). You might get lucky and not have anything bad happen – or your hair could turn such lovely colors as: Frog Butt Green, Swamp Bottom Black, Bozo the Clown Orange, or my favorite; Goat Vomit Yellow. Or you could even have a chemical reaction and burn/melt your hair!
Nothing to fool around with! http://www.hennaforhair.com – look under “warnings” on how to deal with this…
August 12, 2012 at 11:36 pm #185635I work at Sally Beauty Supply, and we sell a brand that has no PPD in it. I don’t know a ton about the allergy, but I do know our boxes say that (in one brand) and that particular brand is the most gentle I’ve ever used. Are you positive that’s what the allergy is though? I’d be terrified to dye my hair again after that. And that’s saying something, since I’ve been dying my hair every few months since I was 13 haha!
