Curly Style

Postby Cpagrl561 on Fri Oct 28, 2011 11:33 pm

Looking for suggestions on a good curling mousse.. I have naturally curly hair but I relax it. I want to wash it and do a curly style for a couple days without it frizzing and looking like a lion's mane. I would love any suggestions on products and tools I should look into. Looking for anything to help achieve something similar to this style..... Thank you so much in advance!!!

There's a few different systems, but the one listed on NaturallyCurly is probably one of the more common ones. There are different curl types, and depending on what yours is will pretty much make or break what kind of curls you'll end up with when you use a curling mouse or pomade to help given definition and hold. If your curl type is not the one you've pictured, then the chances of you being able to just throw product in your hair and get that look is zip to none.

And, I'm sorry but I only just realized that when I first posted I missed the bit where you said you relax your hair. You see, if you're chemically relaxing your hair then product alone is not going to get your curly locks back, you've essentially changed the structure of your hair from curly to straight and so now it will behave in the same manner as straight hair does. The only option is heat styling, the same way a straight hair girl would.

This is the best I could do as far as pictures of my hair when it's curly... Sorry. Still not sure what curl type I am?? I don't expect to look exactly like the celeb. picture because I'm not sure my face shape and size could handle it but just something so that I don't have those strands of "straight" in the front off the curl look...

Otay, now I'm a confused *lol*

Is your hair chemically relaxed or does it still have the natural curl to it if you let it do its thing?

Also, not to be rude or intrusive, but I have to ask .. what ethnicity are you?

Lol, I know sorry to confuse you.

You're not being rude. My parents are from Jamaica. I'm black.

My hair is chemically relaxed. This is how it looks when I wash it. I may have put some curling mousse in it to keep the frizz down because it gets really frizzy without any product but it's still not as curly as I'd like it to be... But based on your post I probably won't get it just the way I want....

That's very strange. Normally if hair's been chemically relaxed then it shouldn't curl at all after being washed, it'll suppose to basically act as straight hair would. But, given that you're Jamacian it would explain why you've got kinky style roots with more of a loose curl along the length, assumeably where it was relaxed. I'm guessing the relaxing didn't work as well as it should have.

You can take the fuzz out of your curls by applying a hydrating conditioning spray after you've jumped out of the shower. Don't dry your hair with a fluffy towel, but instead opt for either a micro-towel or a tshirt as it's not as prone to causing the static fly-aways and fuzz. If you use a small amount of pommade on your hair while it's still damp, this will help give your curls definition as they dry, thus helping to prevent them from fuzzing out. But I don't think any of this will give you the specific style you're looking for, not exactly. However, there's absolutely nothing to stop you from simply using a curling iron. It's not difficult to do, and could easily be used to produce that style. I have crazy mixed curl type, especially as my current long hair weights down some of my curls causing some to be much looser than others. But, I can barrel curl my hair in less than an hour very easily, and with a little heat protector and spray it'll hold shape all day, while on the other hand it would honestly take me at least two or three times that to straighten it (my hairs particularly resistant to straightening) and it tends not to hold up so well.

As for celebrities . . . to be honest, I have always been particularly envious of black womans hair. It's extremely distinctive, and personally it has always reminded me of regal imagery of strong African and Pacific woman through-out history. Of course, I understand that there is no one type specific to all black woman the world over, but I always adored the more kinky curl type that seems only exclusive to black woman, and worn with pride by the strongest and most independent of black woman in history.

Thank you so much for you help. I am definitely going to try this technique today. Any suggestions on good pommade brands?

I totally agree with you on black women's hair. It just exudes confidence and strength which I strongly admire.

I can't suggest a brand, the pomade I use I picked up off etsy and is really just a very generic ingredients list, nothing particularly special. I would suggest checking out the Naturally Curly website for reviews if you're looking to buy something locally, as they have a lot of product reviews on curl friendly stuff there.

And yes, I couldn't possibly agree more.

Just depends on how curly the hair is. I have extremely curly hair also. I also have it chemically relaxed and after I wash and dry its still curly and frizzy and I have to flat iron it. If I didn't relax it, it wouldn't even get close to being straight after flat ironing. For days that I don't feel like going through the ridiculous time it takes to flat iron use Moroccan Oil Curl Cream, it is God sent. It doesn't give you that bushy curly or frizzy curly look. I used to hate wearing my hair curly until I used this because most products just shrink up the curls and it makes your hair look WAY shorter and you have this puff ball thing going on. But this one works wonders. I just try to get most of the water out of my hair and apply a little bit and dry it on a low setting, but I don't dry it all the way to try to prevent the shrinkage. When I'm done I have long pretty curls vs. my natural extremely kinky frizzy curls.

Hope this helps.
