No Blush

Postby let-themhave-cake on Sat Jul 23, 2011 5:42 pm

I think i am certainly the odd one out but i do not enjoy wearing blush.

I think it looks great on other people but every time I try to use it, it goes terribly terribly wrong. It looks like i have so much makeup on my face, even if i don't, and even with very natural muted colors it make me look like a clown or like i have a red face (regardless of color pink, red, coral, plum it all looks the same on my face)

Not to sound arrogant but i am NOT a makeup Newbie. It is not that i apply too much and i have tried so many brands, brushes, and it still looks bad on me. My only explanation is that i am so fair skinned that i am doomed to have every blush look like redness. IDK. I am very olive toned and lighter than an NC15.

My issue is that i have no idea how to bring life to my skin and make it look dimensional when i cannot apply blush or bronzer without it ruining the rest of my makeup.

Any Ideas?

You might not be a newbie, but I'd pose the question of where you apply it.

I find that if I use what I like to think of as the grin & buff method, where you smile and apply it to the apples of your cheeks, I end up looking like I'm sunburnt. Because once I'm no longer smiling, the blush covers most of my face, going all the way down to my mouth. So, I opt for applying it in a line from my hairline forward across my cheek while my face is relaxed.

My favourite blush at the moment is actually lavender. It adds a glow to my cheeks, but doesn't add more pink to my face.

As for bronzer, I only contour along my hair and jaw line because I find that doing under my cheeks ends up in the wrong place the moment I smile. But, I do feel as if contouring my hair and jaw line helps to add dimension and warmth to my face.

For me, I feel that highlighters are the most important thing in my arsenal, more important than blush or contour/bronzer when it comes to face products. Creating light helps to really give my face the dimension I desire.

Those are some very good tips thank you!

As for where i apply, i have a rounder face so generally i apply (i believe as you described) From my hairline towards the back of my cheekbone and swept towards the front of my cheek. I try not to get too much on the apples of my cheek cuz it just looks like i forgot to put foundation there afterward. :(

I have not seen many lavender toned blushers. Any good reccs?

Again Thank you for your tips

I feel your pain, I really do. I didn't wear blush for years because it always looked so ridiculous on me, especially as I'm cool tone and my skin is already quite pinky.

As for lavender blushes, a lot of Asian brands have them. I'd suggest looking at Skinfood and Etude House, they both have a few which are easily available on eBay for around $7 - $13us (including delivery). There are other brands, but you'd be looking at spending $20us or more, and I think that's a little much if all you'd like to do is try out the shade.

I will have to try that. It i good to know i am not alone however.

The worst was when i went up to a counter and saw the most gorgeous amber-ish coral blush, omg it was awesome and i knew i would never pull it off, of course the sales girl was doing her job trying to sell it , bless her heart :) she put it on me and tried to tell me it looked wonderful on my pale skin. I wanted to believe her sooo bad, but regrettably my eyes would not deceive me.

It is a pain but i do like being pale, i can rock a red lip but just not any blush. LOL seems like a bad trade off to a makeup junkie like myself.

I'm not quite as bad as you, in that I can get away with some pink/red tone blushes if they're sheer and I apply them along the cheek bone carefully. I usually stick to vintage dusky rose tones, the kind which are more brown or mauve than pink. Actually, I only just thought of this because I don't often apply the blush I use this trick on, but another trick I'll use is to apply the colour to the hairline and then use a skin tone powder to blend it forward. It helps to kind of neutralize some of the colour and blend it to a tone more matching my skin.

I'll admit, I'm at odds with my skin colour. If I could change just one thing about myself, it would be my skin colour. But, we work with what we've got.

I'm lighter than NC or NW15 as well.

One tip I've picked up is to use a duo fiber/"skunk" brush -- something like the MAC 187 -- and apply blush in a more circular motion.
Now you're all gone, got your makeup on, and you're not coming back

I have found that a good way to get past that "red face" look is to use a cream blush before your foundation. Once you have put your foundation over the top, it kind of looks like you have a natural "glow from within". I hope this helps xx

I am also very olive toned and lighter than NC15. I had to wait for the Matchmaster foundation to come out to have one finally light enough for my skin tone..

That's really unfortunate about the blush :( I can wear an intense amount of blush and I feel like it still looks alright. I'm sure it looks clownish to others but I have to say, I think my favorite makeup item is mascara and mys econd would be blush!

I hope you find a better application process for you! one thing is maybe you could just contour your face instead of wearing blush or bronzer int he normal sense? sorry if anyone else already offered that :) I didn't read through the entire thread as I'm at work..

I have that problem with most blushes because they are just too dark. I now buy loose powder blushes and mix them with loose powder foundation until I get a light enough shade.

I use to have the problem...no blush looked good on me! But what i realized was where and how I applied the blush! Getting a good brush, and getting a blush that actually compliments your skin tone is the key! You can always go to Sephora or a makeup counter like at the mall, and they can help you pick out a right color, and show u some tips and techniques!

I have red cheeks so I never wear blush. I don't think you can really contour, highlight and wear blush and not look like a clown. It definitely looks good on camera, be it video or still. I think that blush is good for people who completely lack color or markings on their face, like kim kardashian or marlena.

I have to disagree. I lightly contour, highlight and wear blush and I don't look like a clown. Imo, it is all about how you apply it and where you apply it. I use a light hand with contouring and blush and if I feel I need more, then I apply more but I usually don't have too. I think Kim K.looks absolutely fake. I'm not knocking her looks, she is very pretty, but when you are always seen out looking 'flawless', imo, you are compensating for something and have an image issue. I get that she is out in the public eye but nobody can be perfect all the time, and I am sure when she is not filming, she probably doesn't have the 'flawless' face but enough is enough, lol, sorry, Kim K.is really annoying me lately.
