Retinol and retinoids are the only active molecule that has proven to be active in wrinkles prevention, so it's great for 30 somethings
Now you need to be cautious about a few things:
- retinoids should be used at night and not exposed to the sun
- retinoids should NOT be used at the same time as VItamin C - Vit C is great for brightening the skin, it can also help with blackheads a bit, but you'd better use it in the morning under sunscreen, as recent studies prove that retinoids and Vit C used together increase the risk of skin cancer (for very complicated reason but I read the study info, it's serious)
- retinoids can be drying, and some people can't stand them, start using them like every 3 days at first and see how your skin react before increasing frequency. Also, you can 'buffer' it by using a regular moisturizer and then retinoids on top to 'dilute' them so that your skin doesn't freak out. It's a bit of a trial and error in the beginning.
My favorite brand is Avene, they have the highest non prescription rethinaldeid concentrations (rethinaldeid being stronger than simple retinol because of better bio-absorption) in their Eluage, Ystheal and Retrinal ranges. If you can tolerate them, they're the best.
Now, for your blackheads, a salicilic acid toner wil work best, possibly in combination with Oil Cleansing Method using castor oil - but that too can be drying if you do it daily so start slowly.
Hope this helps!
