Silver Metallic Eyes

Metal toned eyeshadow has been one of the hottest trends so far in 2012 and for now it looks like it’s here to stay. Reflective washes of white silver light up the brow bone and add sparkle and dimension to the eyelid. It’s perfect for an evening or party look. Cat Eyes

Pull out your eyeliner ladies because cat eyes are in full force. The familiar flick of liner has returned to the outer corner of the eyes but now with a twist. The double edged cat eye is widely popular. You can achieve this by adding an extra wing at the end of your liner, one for the top and one for the bottom for double the drama.  Use color instead of sticking with the main stream black to add color and dimension to your eyes.

Sun Kissed Skin

In summer we start to crave the sun and the glow that comes along with it. Thanks to beauty manufactures, there are numerous ways to achieve that sun-kissed skin.  Inspired by athletes who spend most of their time outdoors; “sporty-cheeks” are this year’s way to glow. You can mimic the effects of being in the sun by contouring parts of the face with a soft peach bronzer. Just remember, if you are going for the sun-kissed look to keep the eyes and lips natural.

Rose Colored Lips

Lipstick is back! Women are in lipstick heaven and choosing bright, flashy, eye-catching shades. For our porcelain or fair skinned girls, or for those who want a great lip but don’t feel comfortable in reds, then this is the way to go.  Stick to the rose and pink shades but don’t be afraid to try a shade or two brighter than your normal one.   The picture above is Marlena’s Glamorous Neutral Look featuring Makeup Geek’s “Delightful” lipstick teamed up with NYX’s “Smokey Look” Mega Shine Gloss.

Red Lips

Lipsticks most iconic shade is back! Don’t let this intimidate you though, with so many different shades on the market there is a perfect red lip for everyone regardless of your skin tone. If you have fair skin choose a coral-red shade, any other skin tone can go with a true red or blue based red tone to pamper their lips. Mint Accents

This seems to be one of the hottest shades for summer this year. Whether you choose to wear it on your eyes, clothes or nails you are sure to be trendy with this color. This color also looks amazing with gold as an accent. On the runway mint was seen most as a “pop-of-color” or in color blocking. One of the biggest trends with mint is to have it on your nails. Ombre Nails

Ombre hair has been everywhere this year and it looks like the nails are following close behind.  And since you can mix and match colors the possibilities are endless. There are two variations of this, paint each nail a different shade of the same color to give your hand an Ombre look, and the gradient nail. Tribal Nails

Tribal patterns are the hottest trend to hit the nail industry. Tribal design is a fashion print that has crossed the line onto nails. Whether you want a professional to do them, or create your own designs, the key to rocking this latest trend is to pick a design that compliments your natural style. For those who like things a bit wilder, opt for bigger and brighter prints. If you are more subdued choose prints that are smaller and lighter in color. Braids, Twists & Ponytails

All of these are an easy way to spice up your hairstyle. It’s fast and easy and perfect on a hot day or one of those infamous bad hair days. The ponytail is back and easy to do. Wear it low, or slick and damp to achieve this season’s look. Braids and twists get graceful makeovers this season. One of the most popular braids is the waterfall braid with its elegant and simple look. Undone Waves

Beachy undone waves are always a summer favorite. (See Marlena’s Beachy Waves Hair Tutorial) This year’s trend is looser waves that makes the hair look like it was effortlessly done. The beach-ready style only requires a quick blow dry, subtle curl with the curling iron and raking your hands through your hair to create the right amount of “messiness”. Wear it parted on the side, or down the middle to give the barely-there curls your own style.

Colored Hair

It takes serious guts, or being a major celebrity, to pull off shockingly bright hair color. Stars like Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry are just a couple to change their locks to suit their mood. But you can add a touch of color to your hair without transforming all your hair. Try colors that compliment your skin tone. Fair skinned babes want to go with pastel shades like pale pink, lavender and baby blues. These colors also look great against blonde hair. If you have medium to darker skin tones, stick with jewel tones like emerald or deep purple. These also look great with darker haired girls. Try adding a streak or two in your hair, or buy an extension clip to try before committing to the shade.

Bangs

The bang is back, also known as fringe. Whether a deep side swept bang or a set of bangs all across your forehead, bangs are everywhere. Bangs are at their best when they are cut thick, blunt and long. They look remarkable with a bob, short crop or even long hair. If you are feeling a little adventurous you may even want to try the micro-bang. Where normal bangs should sweep the top of the eyebrows, a micro-bang is cut very short coming to the middle of the forehead or even a little above. Either way, the bang or fringe is a great way to give your hair a fresh updated look.

Fashion

Bold Prints

So maybe pushing the boundaries of fashion isn’t for everyone, but if you love bright colors, bold graphics or flower prints then this is the season for you! Regardless if it’s stripes, tribal, abstract or floral, every print is in. If you decide to rock a bold print dress, keep the shoes neutral. A great print shirt looks great with a sleek pencil skirt or jeans. Just keep the accessories to a minimum; the focus should be on the print. Mixing patterns is a great way to show off your individuality and creativity, just remember to let your print be the star of the show.

Bold and Blingy Appliqués

From face lace that goes around the eye and across the forehead, blinged out phone cases, studded nails and shoes, bling is everywhere. Add a pop of bling in your wardrobe by wearing a pair of studded heels like the ones we see Kim Kardashian wearing. Add lace or rhinestones to your nails with nail wraps or by a professional. With so many different ways to add bling to your wardrobe the possibilities are endless.

Peplum Skirts & Dresses

Also known as “crumb-catchers”, these are popping up everywhere, especially Hollywood. In case you didn’t know, peplum refers to a ruffle around the waist which adds volume while creating an hourglass figure. From shirts, skirts and dresses this is one trend you can’t go wrong with. They are fabulous and flattering and romantic all at the same time.

Each year has its flow and this year is not an exception. The year of 2012 is all about two completely different looks. Fall and winter 2011 was all about neutrals, and some of that will be spilling over into the Spring/Summer of 2012.  For spring and summer the look is all about a natural, glowing look. It will be full of smudged eyeliner, rosy cheeks, and barely there lips.

Fall and winter get to go in a completely different direction. This year, it’s all about the eyeliner. Expect gorgeous winged out eyes and bold, jewel tone colors. But, the biggest trend will be most seen with eyeshadow. And 2012 is bursting with colors. Now is that time to reach for those blue eye shadows, fire truck red lipsticks and intensely pink blushes.

The year 2012 is about highlighting your facial features with shades. From everything to colored eyeliner to a touch of color in the inner corner, color is back! Below are some trends you can play around with to make a look that is completely your own.

Spring/Summer Glow

With summer just around the corner, you want to look like you have sun kissed cheeks—even on a cloudy day. The warmer season brings warm, luminous faces with just a hint of color. Many of the runway shows, featured models with a healthy flush to the cheeks as if they had just been outside. Achieve the same healthy coloring by going for more light pink, peachy pink or apricot blushes.

For that extra glow, use a touch of bronzer that has a little shimmer. If you prefer matte blushes and/or bronzer, add that hint of glow with a highlighter. If you want your cheeks to be the center of attention, then pair this trend with neutral eyes and lips and it will look like you just had fun outdoors. On well moisturized skin, peach and bronze are what made this gorgeous look a favorite, dubbing it the “sporty cheeks”.

Rock Those Red Lips

Red lips are the talk of the town this year. The reds range from blue-based (cool reds) to warm reds. There is no limitation too as to the finish. Choose between a matte lipstick or go all out with one that is super glossy. The idea here is to draw attention to kissable lips.

If you’re a bit shy about donning a daring red, that is not a problem. Go for more muted reds that give you soft rosy lips instead. You can also opt to use sheerer lip glosses than lipsticks, or you can dab the lipstick instead of swiping it across the lips to get that soft wash of color. Pair your bold lips with neutral make up on the eyes and cheeks and you are good to go.

Eyeliner Trends

The latest eyeliner trend features a double flick at the outer corner of the eye. This gives the traditional cat eye liner a twist. Play around by making the bottom flick thicker than the upper one or use another color on the upper flick. If you are up to it, you can even extend the flick as far out as you are comfortable with or use colored liquid liners for a more fearless look.

Colorful Smokey Eyes

This trend veers away from the traditional black, gray and brown smokey eyes and goes for navy blue, deep purple and green, and silver. Using a color of your choice, it is smoked up almost until the brow and the color on the lower lid is brought a little lower than usual. Experiment with smoking the color out first until you find the right intensity for you. Pair it with neutral lips and cheeks and you are ready for a night out.

Full, Lush Eyebrows

Pack up your tweezers and cool down those wax warmers because full, natural brows are in this year. Known as the “power brow”, this striking and feminine look can be achieved with brow powder, pencils, or with simply styling your brows by brushing them upwards. Using a brow gel can help hold not only the color but the shape of the brows as well.

Be Yourself

Whichever trend you pick just remember that you do not necessarily have to follow them as seen on the runway. Tweak them to suit your features and so that you are comfortable with it. Remember that these trends are guides, not rules and you are the boss of your makeup. So, whether you want to make a bright and bold statement with your look, or just be your natural and beautiful self… this is the year for you!

Makeup style was very subtle, just a hint of mascara, peachy blush and maybe some lipcolored lipstick.

Flapper style!

Theatrical, kinda clownish style, small clearly defined pouty lips.
Eyeshadow was applied in round shape, and brows were drawn thin.
Sometimes several beauty marks were drawn on face.

Keywords of makeup: “Cupid’s-Bow lips”, dark round eyeshadow, thin eyebrows.

30′s:

Bold, linear symmetry, dynamic.
The eyebrows were plucked thin or shaved off entirely.

Style was very elegant, and 1930′s look can be still used as night-time look.

40′s:

Close to classic 50′s look, but a bit toned-down version of it.
Brows started to get their angular shape, and lips were the main point of 40′s makeup.

Eyes had only mascara on upper lashes and maybe a hint of light brown to crease.

Keywords of makeup: angled brows, red pouty lips.

50′s:

Classic pin-up decade.

Lips were red, brows were quite anglular, winged liner, false lashes…
You know the drill.

60′s:

Time of heavy makeup.
Shadows were heavy and rounded, black liner was used both on upper and lower lashline.
Thick false lashes were used, sometimes even on lower lashline.
Brows were also heavy.

Lips were very pale, pastels and  pearly pink lipsticks were used.

No blush was used.

70′s:

Discoball time!

Disco was the big thing of the 70′s, and it showed on makeup. Glitters and shimmers were popular, as well as cream blushes and flavored lipglosses.

80′s:

Dark eyes lined with layers of black pencil,  and bold shades of eyeshadows.
Bright lips, such as fuchsia, orange, red or pink or other that screamed to be noticed.

90′s:

A bit of everything.
Theme of the nineties seemed to be “Be yourself” which practically meant that everything could be worn.

I really don’t know if there’s a theme in 2000′s.  Maybe it’s the smokey eye with nude lips is the most iconic one.
Also nude makeup look became really popular.

Fashion shows are a hotspot for finding exciting beauty trends and backstage at Spring 2010 Fashion Week we saw tons of funky makeup looks we loved. Over and over again we were told that most of these looks were wearable in real life, so we decided to put that statement to the test. We invited MAC and their makeup artistry team to give Associate Editor Megan McIntyre a runway-inspired makeover to test-run and see if it really worked off the runway. First up: Matte, neon orange lips, as seen at Twinkle by Wenlan.

Orange is not a color I would say I’m comfortable with. Coral and I have an okay relationship, but the highway-safety-vest orange that dominated the Spring 2010 runways is not something I see as easy to wear. Therefore, I was a little shocked when MAC Senior Artist Gina Bettelli told me that it’s actually a very diverse color that works on any skin tone. It also helps make blue eyes like mine stand out because orange is a polar opposite of blue, so it draws out the color, making eyes appear brighter.

Gina wanted my lipcolor to last, so she started off by dusting my pout with Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation. Then, using a lip brush, she applied Lipmix in Orange all over my pout. The color was intense and the matte finish left my lips feeling a bit dry, but manageable.

The minute I left the makeup chair, the comments started flowing. One coworker nicknamed me Hot Lips while another commented that she couldn’t concentrate on what I was saying because she was too busy staring at my lips. Once I ventured outside, I expected to get “crazy lady” stares, but was surprised when no one batted an eye. I got a few double takes from tourists and some construction workers on their break had some colorful comments for me, but no one was pointing and staring. I also kept hearing friends and coworkers say they had never noticed before what a pretty lip shape I had. One even said I had Angelina Jolie lips–sweet!

If you like the idea of orange lips but want something a little less bright, Gina recommends trying out a lipstain like Pro Longwear Lipstain Marker because it’s a “non-threatening way to do a bright lip. It has precision and it’s longwearing so you don’t have to babysit it,” she says.

“Babysitting” was definitely a requirement with this look; I had to touch my lips up at least 5 times throughout the day. Aside from that one pesky point, I really loved orange lips. Once I got used to the shock of seeing myself in such a bright color, I began to really dig the way it looked on me. I felt more confident and a whole lot of sexy as I made my way from event to event later that night. Verdict: Wearable, but be prepared to put in some major effort to maintain it.

When Oscar night rolls around, we expect to see the usual array of smoky eyes and red lips making their way down the red carpet. Instead, this year we saw more starlets ditching the old-school glamour makeup in favor of a softer, more seasonally appropriate beauty look. In a continuation of the romantic hairstyles and makeup trend we saw at the Golden Globes, the Oscars were all about nude and pastel tones on eyes and lips.

If there’s one thing Jennifer Lopez loves, it’s a shimmery pastel eye. This year she teamed up with makeup artist Matthew Vanleeuween to create a look that really highlighted her gorgeous lavender dress. Working with Nars, Vanleeuween used D. Gorgeous Single Eyeshadow and Brousse Duo Eyeshadow to create a soft lilac eye with just the right amount of definition on the lashline. Another important feature for this look were the cheeks. “I wanted to create an ethereal movie star look. I kept the cheekbones high and highlighted with the Enchanted Cream Blush (on counter in April) for a soft and supportive look,” said Vanleeuween. Lips were layered with Cruising Lipstick and Sweet Dreams Lip Gloss to create a warm, pinky-nude lip that kept the pastel shadow and shimmery cheek from veering into ice princess territory.

Rachel McAdams’ trendy tie-dye dress was the inspiration for her pretty red carpet makeup. “There was a wash of cool tones in the dress–blue, green, purple, pink–so we wanted the eye, cheek and lips to all have this same water color sheerness to it,” said makeup artist Kayleen McAdams. On the eyes, Kayleen used Chanel Fluid Iridescent Eyeshadow in Fountain, keeping the grey tone on the outer corners of the lid and underneath the eye. On the lid and up to the browbone she swept a rose gold shade, then finished by applying Soft Touch Eye Shadow in Slate on the inner corners of the eye. Kayleen chose Rouge Coco in Rose Comete on the lips to give them that beautiful, healthy pink color. A dab of Glossimer in Futile accentuated the hue and gave it a modern gleam.

After spending all of her on-screen time in Avatar sporting CGI blue skin, it makes sense that Zoe Saldana would want to keep her makeup minimal on the red carpet. Makeup artist Vera Steinberg balanced out Zoe’s confection of a dress with a sophisticated, creamy nude look. She kept skin luminous with Nars Orgasm Illuminator and Enchanted Cream Blush and lips were neutral and glossy with Love Devotion Lipstick (available in April) and Ophelia Lip Gloss. Steinberg kept the focus on Zoe’s amazing almond-shaped eyes, using Brousse Duo Eyeshadow on the lid and lashline, then defined their shape with Nuits Blanches Eyeliner Stylo.

Tips:

• Not everyone needs to contour- if you feel that your cheekbones are prominent or that your face is thin, it is best not to contour as you may appear too “chiseled”
• ALWAYS choose a cream or powder that is just 2 shades darker than your skin- any darker, and it looks unnatural
• If you use cream to contour, make sure to apply after your foundation and before your setting powder
• It takes practice getting the contour technique down as each face is different, so don’t give up!
