Review: NARS Loose Powder
Since I’m always on the hunt for the best foundations and powders to achieve that “flawless face” look, I decided to give this NARS Loose Powder a try. The instant I put this powder on, I think the heavens opened and angels sang! I LOVE this product!
- Product: 5 out of 5
- Packaging: 2 out of 5
- Quality: 5 out of 5
- Overall: 5 out of 5
- Would I buy again? YES!
- Price: $34.00
Where to Buy:
They describe it as:
“This powder is triple milled and provides sheer, ultra-natural coverage to set makeup, soften color and smooth the texture of the skin for an overall radiant complexion. The silky-smooth texture blends undetectably into the skin, absorbs excess oils and maintains fresh looking skin with an imperceptible finish. Packaged complete with its own powder puff and both plastic and mesh sifters to provide the finest, most natural application possible.”
Advantages:
- Variety of colors for each skin tone
- Light feeling on the skin
- Enriched with Vitamin E
- Triple milled for ultra smooth texture!
Disadvantages:
- The packaging
Overall Opinion:
My skin has never looked smoother since getting this powder! I love how it doesn’t feel heavy and is so easy to apply! Not only is the powder triple milled, but it also has vitamin E which feels oh so nice on the skin. The powder puff vs. using a brush seems to not only apply less product (which prevents that “cakey” look), but also produces a smoother finish. The only problem is that I don’t see a good way to clean the puff, so be careful not to use this on your face if you have oil on the skin as it will collect bacteria. My suggestion is to get the smaller version of the puff from Sephora- they are $3 and easier to get in the crevices around the nose and under the eyes.
The only thing I don’t like about this NARS powder is the packaging! What is with the mesh screen on top of the powder? I see no purpose in it other than to leave a mess of powder all over my counter… If the container were round instead of square, it would be easier to get the puff in the lid to pick up some powder. But, I love this product so much that I will overlook this issue and thank the NARS scientists for being so dang smart.

What color are you? Thanks!
Do you think that this would be a good powder as just a foundation??
Thanks for the review!!
if you have absolutely perfect skin, then of course you can use this powder solo.
for me (i’m 34, and my skin is – alas – not as flawless as it was), it works absolutely great over foundation. but solo – no. to little coverage (is that the correct word?) and on my rather oily skin it creeps in the *cough* wrinkles, creating this cakey look i so much want to avoid.
on a good foundation, however, it is utterly great. smooth, silky, doesn’t “bake”.
btw: i simply washed the puff along with some silk stuff in hand cycle in the washing machine and added some sagrotan conditioner (don’t know what that is in english, it kills bacteria but is gentle enough to be used on delicate fabric, it’s not a bleach!). great result.
have a nice day, everyone!
I just don’t get on well with loose powder, anyone know if the pressed version of this is as good? Thanks for the review.
Oh my gosh, this site is getting me to spend my whole paycheck!!
Will have to check it out!
Deb,
I feel the same way jajaja…
Marlena, I really hope you are going to do a tutorial using this product! I want to know if you are using it as a foundation or as a setting/finishing powder over foundation. Thanks for this review and PLEASE do a video tutorial using it. Thanks again.
“The instant I put this powder on, I think the heavens opened and angels sang!”
LOL, that’s hilarious! Must be damn good; I’ll have to keep an eye out for it.
If you check it out on the Sephora french website you’ll see this powder sold for 37€ ( = $54) crazy, (I’m so mad at the prices such a shame, that goes for MAC too), in only two shades : “eden” and “flesh”. Thanks for the review Marlena, so sweet as usual ^^
Perhaps this would be a solution for you:

They ship within Europe, the powder only costs 27€ and it comes in 6 shades. Maybe that would be an alternative for you!
I would love to have this powder, but I have no possibility to check out the color in person. Which one would match a NC15?
Thanks for the great review! I’ll probably check it out. I too am always looking for the best powder and foundation. How does it compre to Bare Minerals Mineral Veil? For years, that has been my go-to for setting powder and can’t live w/out it. Thanks!
Thanks for the review. What I like to know is do you use as a foundation or as a setting over foundation. Please do a tutorial so we can all see how it looks.
Love everything you do. Congratulations on you web site.
Wicked review – sounds like a must have. I agree with Maya, can we have a tutorial one this one pweeeeaaassse??
This is a setting powder. It doesn’t have any coverage… the few colors are to prevent any ashy-ness from occurring… Honestly, there is a certain technique that will make you fall in love with loose powders, the rock-n-roll technique.
Are you using this over your liquid foundation?
yes, over liquid
Im new to your site and absolutely LOVE it, the best ive ever seen online for cosmetics <3 Since im new im not sure if you have already talked about this but do you know of a great powder that you could get from the drugstore?
is this powder to be worn as a foundation or do you use this on top as the setting powder??? ive been using pur minerals powder as a foundation but i want to start applying the real deal and from my research..lol that would be liquid foundation first.
by the way i found your site on youtube and i find it OH SO helpfull! thanks
check out her guides at the top, she has a great 1 about affordable products.
What color do you use in the Nars powder and how much color shows up from the powder?
I have it too and I love it sooo much – shade Beach, I have used it for two years, unfortunately I cannot get it here, so everytime when I have a chance I get it abroad, it sooo good, recommended…
Just got mine yesterday! Cant wait to use it!
I bought this powder after reading this review. It is the BEST powder I have ever used, I normally get a little oil buildup on my face over the day but not with this powder. It keeps my skin matt all day and sets my makeup for however long I choose to wear it. Definitely recommend it!! Only downside is the packaging as it can be a little messy!
I also just bought it after reading Marlena’s review and used it yesterday for the first time. The shade they recommended was Beach; my skin has yellow undertones. I also agree that it is the BEST powder! I wore it to a Halloween party and though I danced and it was hot (Florida), my skin remained matte and appeared flawless. I agree with Marlena and Carina that the only negative aspect is its packaging. I recommend it to all without a doubt. Thank you Marlena for your reviews. They are terrific!!!
Great product!!! Love this powder, lasts and looks great. I’ve gotten compliments since i started using it
How do you know which shade would suit you?? all these yellow and rose undertones have me confused which one would suit me!:)
I use BE translucent powder & it works great, but of course I have to go to Sephora and give this on a try. I love it! It feels so smooth, I got help from a sales rep to choose the color.
The packing is horrible, I had to put it in a zip lock bag and keep it really tight with a rubber band, because if you are not carefull you will end up wasting half it, it just comes out even when it’s closed. With the bag a rubber band, no mess!!! nothing comes out, even if its in my bag.
