How to Organize Your MAC Eyeshadows
This is for all you MAC junkies out there! It gets crazy trying to organize all those eyeshadows in a practical way so you can utilize every shadow. So… here’s just a few helpful tips and some bonus pictures.
Neutrals, Neutrals, Neutrals…
- Try to have one full palette of just neutrals as this will be your “go to” palette.
- Top row should be your highlight colors- ones that are close to your skin color. Have a variety of shimmer and non-shimmer shadows. Some of my favs: Brule, Naked Lunch, Shroom, Malt
- Middle row should be your blending colors- ones that are 1-2 shades darker than your skin color that you can put in the crease. Some of my favs: Wedge, Cork, Omega
- Bottom row should be your accent colors- ones that you can smudge along the lashline for that smoky look or put in the outer V for that added drama. Some of my favs: Espresso, Carbon, Concrete
Bring on the Color!
- We all have our favorite eyeshadow colors that we wear regularly, but try to have a variety of colors to broaden your makeup looks. Here are the basic color categories I have: Blues, Greens, Purples, Pinks, Oranges (teals can go in either the blue or green palette, and yellows or golds can go with the orange)
- Depending on how many eyeshadows you have, reserve a palette for each color or 2-3 colors per palette. I still keep the lightest colors in the top row, medium colors in the middle row, and the darkest in the bottom row.
Labeling Your Palettes:
- To fit more eyeshadows in each palette, I popped out the plastic divider inside to allow for 21 eyeshadows instead of 15.
- To see what colors I have in each palette, I used 3/4″ round labels (Avery #5408) and printed the names on them. If you need to move your shadows around, simply place another sticker on top.
- If you have more than one palette, it is good to have them labeled on the outside so you know what palette to pick up. You can either use a silver sharpie and write on the palette (it wipes off with some rubbing alcohol), or print a label and stick it to the front. If you use a label, place a piece of packing tape on top so you can wipe the palette clean without taking off the label.
I do NOT expect anyone to have this many shadows, but wanted to post pictures so you can see what the colors actually look like and how you can organize them. So, on to the makeup porn

Thankyou so much….I’m a makeupartist in the music video and print arena….I needed the organization!!!!!
wow!! very nice! organisation like an exact swiss clock! hihi
help!! addictive!!
I’d like to have so many eye-shadows, but as I’m not a makeup artist, I don’t really have to. have already so many!
greetings, hope you have a nice sunday afternoon! all the best
I WANT IT AAAAAAAALL!!! :p
Ooooh, pretty! I’m guessing your mystery non-shimmery neutral is Orb.
That might be it!!! THANK YOU!!! I’ve been racking my brain for weeks now trying to figure out which one that was
I just bought the Orb eyeshadow and love it!
How do you do your hair like in the blue and cooper video. Love it thaks
That’s what I thought too but it’s in the Warm Browns/misc palette, though she might have two.
I love Orb!
OMG, great info! I’ve been wanting to get my shadows organized for son long, and now I know how! Thanks!
Thanks alot Marlena…Nice…Thanks for all your help…We love you for that. Oh by the way, classes in Houston was awesome. Thanks for all the info.. It was very helpful..Have the pic.. posted on my myspace..We love you! God bless and have a great day!
Thanks sweetie! Was good to meet you- I hope you’ve been doing great!
So FAB!!! Great ideas!!
LOVE the idea of removing the divider!
After two years I finally got around to depotting…love your pics! 34 down, 30 to go, LOL
Thank you so much for the pictures. They really help because when you are the the MAC store some colours may seem very similar to they one´s you have at home but they are actually not that similar. Besides you don´t always remember exactly how a colour may be. So this pictures really help to compare shadows we may want to purchase.
On another subject, congratulations on your weight loss and hope you are doing well.
Awesome tips Marlena! I myself have taken to depotting my shadows, as it is much easier for travel, overall storage, etc. You know what I discovered though, is that you can actually fit 26 eyeshadows in the palette after popping the divider out. The top row consists of 7 shadows, the second row consists of 6 shadows (each shadow needs to be lined up in between the shadows of the first row), then the third row consists of 7 shadows, and then the last row consists of 6 shadows (3 shadows on either side of the snap).
Haha I personally don’t think it looks as nice as the 3 rows of 7 shadows placement, but if space limitation is your main issue, this might be a good alternative
Thank-you so much for all the effort you put into your website as well as your videos! You are by far my favorite artist on YouTube
Take care!
Awesome! Thanks so much for posting this!
Wow! Amazing. I am so impressed with how you have organized your makeup.
Wonderful organization tips!
This is amazing!! Thank you so much! Not only does it help to organize, but see what I can use, that I don’t own, I’ll send you the bill.
jk! I like how you keep the matte brights separate, that’s what I’m doing now, but I have much less of course. I just can’t thank you enough, this is so helpful. This collection really shows that you have an eye for how colors work together.
On a different note; I wanted to thank you. You were the reason I discovered the world of youtube makeup gurus. I was looking for different color combinations to use what I own in different ways and you taught me so many techniques and combinations. You are so creative and sweet, you have inspired me to start makeup tutorials myself, I’ve just been dragging my feet because I know praise comes with ridicule. I wish you the best in your new future endeavors, even if “we” do lose you.
Thank you SO much for such a sweet comment- I truly do appreciate it!
Hi. This was a good idea. i have a lot of single mac eyeshadows and have been trying to think of a way to organize them. i guess you can’t do it this way unless you are buying the magnetic pots though. I’m about to go PRO so I can make the switch and follow this guide. Your talent is unlimited.
You can always de-pot them, apply magnets and store in pro palettes. This helps for all the limited edition colors.
This is so helpful thank you
Awesome thank you for the organizational tips. Looks fab, Your gr8 Marlena!!!
Thank you so much for sharing. My “OCD” is soooo soothed by the way you have arranged you palettes that I might have to rearrange mine…
Many truly gorgeous colors.
Thanks for this post Marlena. I wished I could have at least 10% from your eyeshadows. All of my makeup products fit into a small silver case
and I have to admit that is nice sometime cause when I travel I just know they won’t take to much space
Do you need a new best friend?
i loveeeee this!!! you are genius!!!!
thanks so much for the guide
Marlena, Oh my goodness your organizational skills are fierce. I am going to use your neutral palette as a point of reference for future purchases. thanks for doing this.
wow…I’m amazed with how many e/s that u have…i’m literally drooling..LOL…
In your Browns Mac Eyeshadows where you have a question mark ? that color I believe is “Pecan” I haven”t been able to get it in a while ( was discontinued or limited ) but loved using it for my eyebrows ( I use Folie and swiss chocolate now )since I have copper red hair. Looks like Cork could be a great substitute!! Love this site!! Well done!! CraftTeaGirl
Seriously….is this how guys feel when they see porn?? If so, I get it now.
hehe
I wish there was such variety of MAC eyeshadows here…. I mean, actually we have SEPHORA here, in Portugal but those kind brands are so much more expensive then there, where you live. It’s insane!!
But thanks for the tip!
Thank you so much for this, you are a superrrr teacher for us
I love your site and have learned so much from you. You keep that smile and laugh because when you do it makes me smile and feel good about myself:)
I would love to know where I can purchase the palettes from for not alot of money?
Thank you, and thank you for teaching us!
Hi Marlena,
I was having a look through your palettes… I must say, you are fabulous AND organized! I wish I could be!
I have a quick question… I have picked up Maira’s Mood a few times at the local MAC store, tried it on my hand, but have yet to test it on my eyes… I have about the same colouring (brown) as you do… what are you thoughts on this shade?
Any suggestions are always appreciated
Can’t wait for your next installment! Congrats on the new studio!
OMG!!!
Your “?” isn’t orb?
im going to school to be a makeup artist , i started to build up my make up collection but didnt know how to organize my shadow palletes . thanks to this im completly organized now. thank you
how much total did you spend for everything?
I Love the useful tips on how to organize… sooooo helpful. Now where do I find the pallettes that you put them in? I have never used the pallettes all my MAC shadows are the separate ones. I think using the pallettes would be sooo much more accessible and productive. Can you tell me where to find the pallettes? Help? Thanx Bunches
Here’s the link for the palette:

hi,Marlena, thank you for your answers. How do you describe your eyes?because my eyes are similar to yours.
thank UUUUUUUU
It looks like “Knight”, one of the top picks from your silver/grey palette, is in the “Going, Going, Gone” section (soon-to-be-discontinued colors) on MAC’s web site. Glad I checked tonight before they’re all gone! : D

Hey Marlena. I really want a new eye shadow palette and I was thinking about getting MACs 15 pro-palette. Do you think other brands would be better because I don’t want to spend so much money on it.
so helpful!! One question though, how did vanilla get left of the list of faves in the nuetral pallette, lol. you use it it so many tuts.
Wow, you have an awesome collection! I’m going to pop out the organizers on the rest of my palettes. Way better for storage & less need to buy extra palettes.
wow, what a collection
if you don’t want some of them anymore, then let me know ^^’
i don’t have any mac cosmetic but i wanna get my first one
Hey Marlena!
Thanks for this! I’m so OCD when it comes to organization. I do organize my e/s but your way is better. I’ll be organizing once again! Thank you!
Hey Marlena!
Wow, I’m definatley jealous, especially of the pink pallette. However, I have no money to actually buy real MAC products like these. Although, they are the best of the best, so I guess I can’t complain. You do get your moneys worth.
Marlena, I’m just wondering, how did you become a makeup artist? I’m currently in high school and I’m not sure how to go about that. Because makeup is also a true passion of mine.
hi, i love makeup and i like that natural makeup look. Can u tell me if mac will have these palette or do i have to buy them single cause i have lots of singles and i am runnin out of place in my kit for them.I do persor mac makeup and the palette.
dame love the eyeshadow were are the mac eye shadows located at i wanna buy it
omg love the make up i want it lucky hhehehee
were is the mac eyeshadow located at?
still its very nice
That makes my MAC collection look like crap. I want all of them! This was really helpful though, thanks heaps!
Marlena thank you so much for posting this….It was a big help
I am trying to find out the color that was used on your MAKEUP 101 EYESHADOW!! I know that you used expensive pink, naked lunch, expresso and then I am needing to find out the medium color that was used on the crease–all that you said was that it was a lighter brown. Thanks!!
Thanks for this page, your colors are easier to see on your site than from MAC. You helped me alot of picking out my colors and which ones are your favs. Coming from where I am, there are no MAC makeup stores, so it helped me tremendously in picking my colors. Thankyou thankyou!!
Gosh this is a gorgeous collection!
OMGosh, thank you SO MUCH for this clear and concise organizational review….not only have you provided helpful hints and suggestions for organization, but you have shown SUCH a range of color—-I now need to update my MAC list of shadows and get a shopping list going!!
Thanks and Happy Holidays!!
D.
Hi Marlena,
I’d just like to thank you for all the amazing tutorials, tips and ideas you have shared with everyone, i’m very greatful. You’re make up is just amazing and has made me make my own video make up tutorials (just for fun). Every single day ever since i’ve found out about makeup geek i’m on youtube or your website watching 10 billion tutorials. I can’t begin to tell you how much i want to be like you with all your make up, ideas etc.
Thank you so much!!! You most likely have so many questions to answer every day and of caurse so many comments, would i be able to ask a few questions and if possible could you please answer them!
QUESTIONS: I have makeup (different make up scattered everywhere – not much) i need to know a couple of things:
1. What colour eye shadows are MUST HAVES?
2. What make up are MUST HAVES?
Where can i find cheap, good quality make up including brushes (what are the MUST HAVE BRUSHES?)
Marlena thank you again for all the effort you put into your turorials it is much appreciated, any more tips that you think will be useful and helpful to me will be much appreciated (i dance in many estiedfords and concerts) does that help???
Thank you Marlena you’re a STAR!!!!!!!!
where do you buy the labels and how do you print the names on them??
Wow, I just stumbled onto your tutorial on uTube and was very impressed with what I saw! Out of all the tutorials out there yours is the BEST, very informative and useful!!!!
I’m not an makeup artist but am very addicted to makeup! Your organizational tip is so very helpful that I’ve begun organizing my makeup and enjoying it!
My issue is I have oily eyelids and find that after an hour or so I find that the color has faded. I’ve tried to put more base on the eyelid to prevent it from fading but it doesn’t seem to work. Do you have any suggestions?
Thank you!
D.
I feel better knowing you have more eyeshadows than me
Very informative post, thanks!
hi, i’m having trouble popping out the eyeshadows from the case? i’ve already ruined three eyeshadows trying to get them out.. help!!!
Marlene has a depotting video that is great.. I have depotted Urban Decay and MAC eyeshadows recently. She uses a Flat iron to depot hers but I found a a bic lighter works faster. Although it does have a burning plastice smell for a while. lol that I can live with. I used a pair of tweezers to hold the eyeshadow in the plastic after yiou have got it out of the big container.
