Makeup Geek Star Challenge
Here is your Challenge!
For a chance to win a paid position as a makeup reviewer for Makeup Geek, LLC submit your video of a product review or makeup haul (it can be real or made-up products — feel free to be creative). Videos will be narrowed down to the top ten finalists and viewers will vote for the top 3. Videos should no longer than 5 minutes and please only submit one video per person. Participants can be from any country, but must be at least 16 years of age.
Attach your video response to this YouTube posting. Title your video response as ‘Makeup Geek Challenge’ and if chosen you will be contacted through your YouTube channel.
Submissions must be in by midnight EST Wednesday, 23, 2011. Top ten finalists will be announced Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011.

mock means fake… you can do a fake review on any product
“Mock” makeup review I believe means with made up products. Like things that dont actually exist but that u make up. get it?
Actually, ‘mock (makeup review, audition, interview, etc.)’ means that it can all be pretend, or, like practice. For example, mock trials in some high schools are about the student being put in the same situation as a lawyer, plaintiff, defendant, etc. Basically, they’re asking you to show them a review of a product, and act professional, and as if you were already working for them. I am 13, and I am curious as to why you have to be 16 to do this….. I love beauty videos just as anyone, and makeup is my pride and joy. I feel like I should have a chance to participate.
In most states you have to be at least 16 to get a job. I’m pretty sure thats why the age rule is 16 because you would be getting paid. If you want her to see your video you can still do that just know you don’t have a chance of winning for that reason.

The reason for the age requirement is because that is the age you have to be legally to get a job in many states. In order for someone to pay you to do a job which is what she would be doing you have to be excactly 16 when you apply for the job. But in this case you have to be exactly 16 when you apply for the contest.

A girl above asked the same question and it seems that it would just be easier to judge if its in English but you could do it in Spanish as well but maybe put on subtitles.

Oh my days you guys seriously. It doesn’t matter what mock means, do a regular one. If you’re 15 and not 16 by the closing date then you can’t do it, end of.
And I think its fairly obvious that you can only submit one. Why should you need to submit more than one if you’re good enough for the job!

For everyone asking the question “I’m almost 16 can I enter?” Not unless you are exactly 16 when you enter the contest. So if your birthday is in the next couple of day yes. But if your birthday is any date after March 2nd then no. If I’m correct the reason for the age limit is because that is the age most states require you to be in order to get a job which is what you would be winning.

Nicola has said this over a 10 times. As long as you are 16 by March 2nd you are eligible to enter (NOT the Feb 23rd).
If you are not 16 by March 2nd do not enter a video. It’s quite simple people!

Hey guys instead of repeating the same question over and over..try looking at other comments to see if its posted there. If ur under 16 and ur bday is after the date shown..you wont be chosen..doesnt mean you cannot enter a product haul etc. in order to submit a video be 18 & up and you will be possibly chosen into tge contest. Just have fun

My only worry is the voting system. I know that your panel will be choosing 10 finalists and that then the viewers will be choosing the top 3, but that method sometimes turns out to be unfair. I’ve seen many contests like this where the most “popular” youtube Guru or the person who posts their video all over Facebook fan pages gets the most votes, making it unfair for those who are new to Youtube or who don’t have 3,000 Facebook friends
I totally agree with you….I am so excited to do it since would be my first video ever, but at the same time I feel a little scared. I really think Marlena and her staff should make the final decision because at the end whoever wins will be working for her!

I’d just like to say that I already submitted my video and I’ve had really positive feedback. The makeup geek community is just so lovely and has been so positive. For any of those who want to do this but feel too shy, I say go for it anyways. Seriously, MUGs have just been so nice to me that I just don’t think you should worry about it and just go for it!

I have a question about submitting the entry. It is required to submit a youtube entry to the video. That is not a problem, I can easily create a new channel! But the question is: would we be obliged to put up videos on our channel, or it (our channel) will just not be promoted?
If we will become the star of MUG, our videos will be on your channel, right? Hope I didn’t get you confused

I just wanted to make sure that the time limit for the video is still 5 minutes. A lot of people who have entered already have videos exceeding 5 minutes, & I personally don’t think it’s fair to keep someone in a competition who doesn’t follow clear rules.

I chose to review a skin care product, which usually involves more information than a makeup product. I tried so hard to get my review under 5 minutes, but the closest I could get is 5:14 while still including all the pertinent information on the product and without the review feeling rushed. Will that extra 14 seconds disqualify me or is there any wiggle room on this?
Oh nevermind. I found a little more info I could cut without harming the integrity of the review so my comment is now a moot point! Looking forward to seeing everyone’s videos!

this is so exciting!:) although i will be 16 on march 30th, i have an idea the majority of the comments i read dealt with people not yet 16 i think an alternate contest should be made up for younger viewers interested in doing something like this because there probably is really skilled people out there wanting to get noticed and practicing which is a major thing with makeup artistry, of course it wouldnt be paid position but an oppertunity to start off and learn what it is like. Marlena i hope you are feeling much better, you have really inspired me in many ways! I have learnt so much from you and oppertunities have been popping up for me:) Not only have you inspired me as an artist but as a person as well, I have also been eating wayy better and I didn’t even realize at first you have made a huge impact thank-you and I hope you have a well ended recovery!

I have seen some great entries for this contest. Unfortunately some of the best reviews are more than 5 minutes long, or titled incorrectly. I don’t know how strict she is going to be, but come on people follow the rules. READ! Some great entries aren’t going to make it because they cant follow directions.
Honestly… if they didn’t find the time to read this post till the end or watch the video… they should be disqualified … I mena really?! that is unprofessional that you can’t follow the simplest rules
lol, Sam I agree but I don’t think its really necessary to complain about it. I think the Judge set the rules and I think they will probably enforce their own rules. I think the people who went over 5 or didn’t title right did not even go to the website to check out the rules, which is kind of strange and little lazy. If you want something bad enough you think you would be completely on point. I was actually being a troll lol and counted that 30 percent of the contestants did not follow the rules, and that’s not even counting people who were between 5-6 minutes.

I totally agree. Any one person’s review could be better & more thorough by taking up more time that was allowed. It just isn’t fair to the other people participating.

Youtube has sent a warning to me and a few more. Some viewers or someone that is competing is FLAGGING videos:

I’m pretty sure competitors are also DISLIKING videos for the sake of trying to make them look bad. I’ve applied and I haven’t disliked anyone else’s videos who have applied in an effort to beat them. Some people haven’t been taught good sportsmanship, apparently!
Also, I’m a bit concerned about the viewer voting for the top 10. Obviously people in the 10 who have more subscribers will get more votes, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are the best for the job, know what I mean?
But… not much can be done about that I guess! Let the chips fall where they may, haha. :p
Will the winners be making video reviews, or writing articles? Also, what if we can’t afford to buy products for review?

I agree with April, I think this is pretty important to know. All we know right now, is we make videos for a contest, to win a job position. But to those in the working world, we know there’s a lot more to know before applying for a job….
Makeup Geek would, in most cases, provide the products in one way or another. We will have a minimum time period that the winners would need to commit to. After that, we could possibly keep you on longer-term if things go well

“Marlena is buzy watching the videos but there were hundreds of them and it takes much more time than she thought it would. She’ll be announcing the winners as fast as possible, so hang in there : ) ”

let her take her time .. no rush..
So lets break it down: Number video entries= 326. Average length of each video, about 5 mins lets say. So 326×5= 1630 mins! and 1630/60mins…..is about 27 hours and 15 mins!! That’s a long time to watch youtube videos! Especially when your tired and still recovering from a major surgery. Marlena, you just go pop some popcorn and take your time! (Or grab some snap peas!) You are going to be hiring one of the winners, so you just do “yo boss thang!” and pick great people!
I can’t wait to find out who the finalists are!!! keeping my fingers crossed I’m one of them because such an opportunity would be amazing for me, but if not that’s ok I’ll still keep on making videos lol
